I've always ridden without any protective gear.
Now, on my powered traditional boards where I'm going 20-25 mph, I wear a Triple8 Brainsaver.
Don't try this at home kids. Wear your protective gear and stay in school.
-
@lynnpreston I ride without protection also. I ride 90% in grass though but I need to start wearing my helmet. My kids must wear theirs and when they are around I'll put mine on. I ride extreme and wide open. Never spilled yet...I guess I should bank my luck and gear up. Over 40 and I still care more about looking like an ass than a broken neck.
-
I use mine for transport a lot, and with it being summer on Florida, I don't like having sweat-soaked hair when I arrive at my destination.
-
When doing longer trips I wear a helmet (more for peace of mind) and wristguards (for the acutal risk of breaking wrists as you will always put your hands down first)
But so far not to many spills! -
@MichaelW
Thanks for the rep! ๐It's become a reflex already for me, I think the key point in riding safe&fast is knowing the boards kick-down's. Plus I think the brakes are on point and very precise.
I'm gaining weight by the way, I can't remember the last time I walked or went for a hike. Lmao
Sponsorship with Marlboro ? -
@lynnpreston
Cool to hear I'm not the only loco.๐
What other power boards are you referred too?
Curious as to what other boards OWer's own.

No gear No fear

naked for now, but haven't really tried anything too crazy.

Depends on how I'm feeling and riding....
Cruising, maybe kneepads. Trying to really feel the edge, pads and a brainsaver.
Definitely, gear up on my other powered boards. -
OOnewheelsurfer 28 July 2015, 23:27 UTC
Waiting on Onewheel to arrive but already ordered & rec'd Triple 8 Brainsaver helmet & Triple 8 exoskin (knee/elbow) very low profile and can be hidden under clothing.

@Onewheelsurfer I really like my Brainsaver. It's the most low-profile helmet I've found. I also have a Bern sink-fit, but the Brainsaver looks much cooler IMHO.
-
I would recommend wristguards over kneeguards. I tend to put my hands down when falling, same as when snowboarding
-
A
Helmet and wristguards (almost) always. But then again, I spend most of my time on intermediate mountain bike trails. So, I come of the OW at least once an afternoon.
-
Hey @veryous and others, out of curiosity, how are you falling? I wear a helmet sometimes, and nothing else. I have fallen twice but only while virtually standing still when trying to do very slow and tight turns and the board would just turn off and I'd land on my arse (I swear my foot was on both sensors, LOL!).
Anyway, I'm not tryin' to fall going full speed (I ride extreme, but don't usually push through it)... tell me how not to ride, haha. -
@kbern I have only fallen under two conditions.
- When an expansion joint on a sidewalk drops over an inch and I don't expect it.
- When I get too aggressive and push the board to take off too fast, or climb a hill too fast.
-
yep! Hope it can help some riders....
Before OW I was riding Freebord and i know that some riders are DEAD after falling down on their back of skull...particulary on asphalt, low speed or max speed, i always WEAR A HELMET...Don't wanna die :skull:
And after second day of ride I buy elbows protects :) I almost lost my tatoo :(
-
@kbern My worst fall is that one, when going up a hill on pavement, too fast and nose dived. A few of us have had this issue, but I haven't since then. The other times I fall is when I'm off pavement like in that grass quarter pipe videos I posted by my house. Recently I found a sprinkler head right after they cut the grass that I never found before. I went flying then, about as good as that picture, but since I hit grass, no blood. Normally its just if I hit a hill off road too fast, I bail and try to run it out which doesn't always work. I got a little too confident coming off a double stair drop the other night, that one ended up in me doing a pushup on the pavement with the wrist guards saving me.
@fabuz I had a friends girlfriend that had serious head trauma the same way. She was riding slow on her bike in the street, caught the tire in a rut, and went down back of her skull on the edge of a curb. They said she was very lucky it wasn't long term brain damage or worse.
-
Just bought a helmet and wristguards....was guilted into it.
-
@veryous Are you going straight off those double stairs? I assume you need some speed for that?
-
Yup, kinda close to straight off but I tried to turn it more straight on the way down and yes enough speed that I didn't want to tap my tail on the way down. I learned going off a curb if I come off at an angle and catch the tail its harder to land. It's easier for me to head close to straight off so I also don't have to fight the angle of me being off balance on landing. It did not work out though and I won't be trying that again till I feel better about it. Plus it seems every time I land on one of these I push the front grip tape up more and more.
-
@veryous these screws stop all grip tape movement.
-
Also, my Vicious grip tape has not slid at all in the ~3 weeks I've had it. And, it's . . . well . . . vicious!
-
Wait! @J-glide whats the story on those screws? How long? Do you have a link? I need those. Did you paint them or did they come black?
-
Thanks for all the fall scenarios, guys. That makes me feel a lot more confident because those are scenarios I would expect to fall and my worry was if there was a scenario I didn't understand and fell.
@veryous, so how big of a hill was it? I went out tonight and was riding up a small hill, but the nose was getting close to the paveyment, but still a few inches away. Do I need to worry about the board actually deactivating when the nose is at that angle or is your nose physically scraping the ground and that's when you fall?
(I guess I can also try going up the hill in "hill profile", but that would require changing a setting in the app before going up). -
@kbern having to stop to change modes is a pain. If I've been riding in expert and I'm about to go a steep hill I'm more likely to wing it in expert than...come to a stop and switch to elevated because it's inconvenient and I know I'd need to change it back at the top of the hill.
I'm guessing this comes down to programming. Much easier to program a transition from one to another mode standing still than moving in various scenarios.
-
@kbern It wasn't that big, maybe ten degrees, but I was going fast, then I hit a little dip in the road, nose hit the ground, board shut off it seemed, I tried to run it out, which I learned I can't do going that speed. Apparently I thought I was an olympic sprinter or something. =) The other time I was going up hill, pushing the board to go faster, too hard, it sort of paused but I barely stayed on that time.
The other times I eat it is when I'm going up a steep hill off road, but that's usually because I'm not in elevated mode and I'm asking too much. Those are easy bails though for me, or it's just a roll out. You're fine I'm sure, I'm just an idiot that pushes things too far sometimes. I have many tires to attest to this while I was younger.
-
@MichaelW The screws are just a quarter inch stainless steel screw. They came painted black on the top. I found them at Lowe's hardware store. If I remember right they are a dollar for four.

Great idea. I'm going to stop at lowes tomorrow, before my new OW even shows up.
-
@sidebox good idea!

DDVO @J-Glide 4 August 2015, 06:28 UTC
@J-Glide did you just screw them right in with a drill?
-
@DVO yes, I probably should have pre drilled the holes, but I just ran them in without. It didn't hurt anything, and the wood didn't crack. All seems perfect!
-
DDVO @J-Glide 4 August 2015, 19:39 UTC
@J-Glide thanks brotha!
-
Anytime I have ever had any issues separating me from the board, it has been when my front foot wanders from the sensorsโฆ Maybe I have just been lucky thus far ๐

I only ride Classic but no protective gear. When I snowboard or ski I always wear a helmet, but not OneWheel.
-
@Andrew As a fellow snowboarder, I would recommend to try the extreme mode, feels much more like snowboarding as your front foot isn't always getting the pushback...

I've tried it but the speed limitations of Classic keep me from going too fast with no protective gear. To use extreme I feel I should wear a helmet and wrist guards.
-
@Andrew makes sense... I also wore a helmet and wristguards, but the helmet stays home most of the times lately... Getting too confident i guess :cold_sweat:

If I'm just messin around my home I wont have my gear on, but if I'm going on the off road course or any other long distance I will. Helmet and wrist guards. I try to wear gear as much as possible. There's really no excuse. My friend who went down, wouldn't have been hurt if he wore wrist guards or a helmet.
