I'm waiting for the android app anxiously as well. I need to change ride mode. I learned to ride in extreme mode on a friend's board ... and having to start in classic when mine arrived felt crazy. My confusion let to my first amazing spill on my commute to work today. I'm glad these things are built tough, lol.
-
Llardnicus 14 October 2015, 13:14 UTC
Android is a nightmare to develop for. It's not as simple as you think.
-
@lardnicus why are their 50 million android apps then?
-
You can changed the mode setting manually..
-
It's gotta be very hard, with all those fancy graphics and features... lol
- Setup bluetooth connection
- Pull config
- Display config
- Change mode...
This isn't rocket science it's just laziness...and really, at this point if they'd just release an API or some docs someone we write a basic no frills app..
-
@Kerton - it all depends on where you live. Sure, anything can happen anywhere. For me, the risk/convenience calculation works out with that lock.
If I lived in a more populated area, I would definitely use a heftier chain.
-
JJamesDavy 15 October 2015, 14:18 UTC
If there's a published API I'll write a basic app!
-
Mmatanm 15 October 2015, 21:34 UTC
@lardnicus, you keep posting how hard it is to develop for Android. And I say I don't understand why a basic demo of application to do the basic functions couldn't be done in a weekend.
It doesn't support 100% of devices? Fine, release it with support to the 40 top devices, that should cover over 80% or so, and update for next devices in the future.
My bet is that they are trying to replace the protocol so people can't tinker with it. In apple the application puts the PIN for you, so you can't access the BT connection.
-
My bet is they haven't started making one..
-
Llardnicus 16 October 2015, 05:11 UTC
@matanm I'm only guessing based on my own development experience with that platform, and all I'm really saying (if I'm saying anything at all) is that; "it's not as simple as your think".
Further to that, it's not as simple as... "[releasing] it with support to the 40 top devices..."
What about the people who don't have a supported device? What are the risks involved if the application doesn't function as expected? What about the tidal wave of support emails and calls from Android users who think that their device should be in that top 40 because it's so wonderful and they paid a lot of money for it. What about if they do have a supported device but not a supported version of Android? On and on...
That aside, we are also talking about bluetooth... Something Android phones have massive, well known issues with. You can't tell every second Android user to download the Android bluetooth connection removal tool when they inevitably get in to trouble.
So the short answer would be yes, sure, they could release a half working version, things not working right is an accepted part of the Android experience, but a slightly longer answer is that it's going to be more frustrating for everyone that way.
It might have been one stuff up with a test version that has opened up a huge can of worms for them with one of the umpteen versions of Android out there in the wild. Judging by how long it's taking, I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of those very small, nuanced quirks in the system that causes the biggest of headaches. It could be as simple as pairing or it could be as serious as a safety issue. Point is, we don't know, but from my experience developing any kind of app that does more than make fart sounds, this is completely reasonable when it comes to such a fragmented and poorly supported platform.
-
The simple answer is they're not working on one, stop trying to justify how hard it is to make...lol
This was a huge reason I waited so long to place an order, they should skipped IOS and made one for android. I'm sure there's many other not buying because of it. Then again they're so backed up it doesn't matter yet.
-
Exactly lmao.. Its easy, they're just not making it yet.. My buddy made an app for the market and a few that were only downloadable from his website..
-
Llardnicus 17 October 2015, 09:29 UTC
@njcustom making an app is easy, you bet! Making an reliable app that uses bluetooth to adjust settings on a 2000W electric hoverboard that carries you at 20kph... not so much.
The app that I worked on was a gyroscopic 360˚ panoramic 4K video app. The app has to combine compass, gyroscope and accelerometer data to affect a quaternion based view and stream select data from a 4K video (because most phones can't handle videos that big).
Did you know that some models of Android phones don't have a compass? We didn't either, until the clients daughter couldn't use the app on her cheap samsung.
That was one of so many different quirks and bugs. We released this particular app on time only because we had a deadline. The Android version was still very buggy and on some devices simply refused to work at all (even newer ones we had already tested). That was not due to lack of want, love or attention mind you! It was simply due to Android OS and devices being so cheap, nasty and fragmented in general.
But hey, you should definitely put your buddy in touch with onewheel, I'm sure he could belt out the app this weekend for them :D
I'm not defending anyone, I'm just postulating based on my own experience that onewheel have bitten off more than they can chew with Android support and/or they have some high standards for the products they put out there and the Android version is taking some serious finagling to get it to a releasable version. Only onewheel know what's really going on...

Given the price point of the OW and that the OW buyer will generally have a higher than average disposable income, it makes sense to me they started with iOS. iOS users earn (on average) 40% more than Android users. Targeting the top end of the market seems to make sense. This is not a commentary on which is better (iOS v. Android). It's merely a reading of the statistics (reference: https://www.comscore.com/Insights/Data-Mine/iPhone-Users-Earn-Higher-Income-Engage-More-on-Apps-than-Android-Users).
At this stage though, I certainly hope FM is well on the way to releasing an Android version.
-
@lardnicus dude, your talking like its impossible.. Youre just wrong my friend.. My buddy does it for a living so it might get done over the weekend.. Maybe not but I know for sure it's not as difficult as you're saying.. Maybe for you it is.. But not a professional.. There are 10's of thousands of android apps.. You can't not tell me OW is any different.. I have a Chinese self balancing unicycle that came with an app... It was made in china lol .. If they can do it we can ;)
-
I realize this is hearsay and a while back, but I just saw this comment on a post in the Onewheel Riders Facebook group. I wouldn't get my hopes up for an Android version any time soon.
-
Jjkopp 22 October 2015, 03:17 UTC
Why does Onewheel post that there is already an Android app on their website and on the box itself?http://rideonewheel.com/
-
Are there plans to release the android app sometime soon? As a proud OW owner I love my board but having to borrow someone else's ios device to change modes is just ridiculous. As much as I like my board without the app it feels like I don't have full control of my board. Maybe release a public beta for us forum users to use? Not sure why the website states there is a android app is available when we don't even have updates about it.
-
@Douevenandroid buy a cheap apple 4s.. They're like 80$ on ebay
-
@jkopp marketing reasons.. It's stupid..
-
Yyolosax 22 November 2015, 01:29 UTC
I was also promised access to an Android App with my purchase, not cool. I love my OW, but it bothers me that I was misled. It's also a big inconvenience for me to carry two devices. FM, please address this ASAP! Thanks.

Ttomtnt 22 November 2015, 07:09 UTC
If it makes you feel any better, neither boosted nor yuneec ego has released a promised android app either. There seem to be some issue with Bluetooth compatibility amongst the various android versions

Contacted FM recently about this. Response below.

I spoke with our app developer and it sounds like we are track to have the Android app released by the end of February. We will make an announcement and make sure all our Android users are in the loop. -
They told me December 2015 months ago lol
-
Yesss i need it!!!
-
Wow that would be great!!
-
M
Any news on the app for Android?
-
T
Something tells me that the Android app wont be available at all.

So sad that this isn't a priority for FutureMotion :(
-

@zlyons I messaged them on Facebook and they said at the end of the month...we'll see
-
Highly anticipating this release. If only for the battery life monitor. I tuned my board with my wife's Iphone. You can tune it with any phone and it stays tuned.
-
@Future-Motion @Onewheel-Support Is the app still on track to be released in the next couple weeks? I understand the iOS app supports Apple Watch; will Android Wear be supported on initial release, or will we have to wait for that feature? I'm all for waiting if it means getting an Android app sooner.
I read in an old forum post that you recommend not changing the shaping without the app because it won't be supported as other shaping modes are released. I understand this, but since there isn't an Android app I may want to switch to "extreme" shaping before it's released since many forum users have recommending abandoning classic mode ASAP. Is it still 2 blinks for classic, 3 for extreme, and 4 for elevated, with the "please please don't try to ride it in the 1 blink mode" that the device may or may not allow the user to set, as described in this thread?
My board is supposed to show up in two days (2/24) and I have absolutely no access to iOS devices at the moment. I'm a little bit perturbed that I placed my order with the understanding that an Android app was currently available. I see that it says, "The Onewheel iPhone + Android apps enable... iPhone app now available in the Apple App Store," which is a sneaky way of saying, 'Android app coming soon!' You guys could have just said, "Android app coming soon!"
Can you at least throw us a beta? I would be happy to test it and submit logs for you on my Nexus 6P and on the myriad other Android devices present in and around my home if it means getting a possibly useful app by the time my OW arrives. Hell, I'd be happy to continue testing beta versions of the app even after it's released to help improve functionality for all.
-
@bmtka Hey relax don't panic ;). I ain't got no Iphone and the app on my Ipad2 won't work. So When I need to change mode I do it manually with the pads. I couldn't sense any differance between the extreem mode over manual switch or over the app (over a friends ipone). You don't have to worry about the 1st mode (learning mode) because you can't access it. It will switch between 2Blinks (Classic) 3Blinks (Extreem) 4Blinks (Elevated). It seems to jump over the first setting (I think FM updated the firmware on the OW and now you can change the modes manually without any concern. Only problem is you can't controll your lights without the app. The day a new firmwareupdate comes out and there is still no android app then just go to a friend and use his Iphone.
OW is about riding it, the app is a good add'in but like I said it's about riding that beast averyday, allday he he got carring away.
Relax and enjoy your board and your practice time! :) -
@mAz Thanks. I know I sounded more uptight than I really am, but I definitely appreciate the info since I couldn't find any recent posts about the appless mode changing. What can you do with the lights? Turn them off so you can roll around in stealth mode?
-
@bmtka save battery live at daylight
-
@mAz So... stealth mode, then. I can't imagine the energy saved by not using the LEDs to be much more than negligible, like 10 or 20 meters worth. Might be cool if they add a a flashing mode, though, for increased visibility.
-
I may be sound stupid but I think you can safe up tu 1 mile on one run when turning off the lights. @bmtka but you may be right. By the way I only use the lights at night because at daylight I just prefer stealth mode like you say :)
-
@mAz Your typical, run of the mill single LED is going to consume 30-60mW (wiki). The ones on the OW look like they might be higher-power, but I can't really tell just yet. I'll be able to examine them closer tomorrow ( :joy: :joy: :joy:). Even if they pull 100 or 200mW each, multiply by 10 LEDs and that's still only one or two Watts of extra battery drain competing with a 500W motor. Of course the motor isn't always drawing 500W or your ride would be over in like 10 minutes. If you're using just 10% of the motor's capacity at 50W, the relative drain caused by the lighting is going to be 2-4% of your battery drain, maximum.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you notice you're objectively losing a whole mile to your lights being on, you might want to put in a support ticket, cuz that just doesn't add up.
The reason I would turn my lights off is because there's this golf course near my boyfriend's house...
-
@bmtka I get your point. I think you're right. It's probably more the fact that there were never lights on a skateboard, it may be because of that that I don't like to have them on at daylight. Old habit, I think I'm a little to old school he he. But damn I like my OW every day more and more, that thing is just crazy! Can't wait to get the fender, the weather here is realy shitty. My pants and shooes will be thankfull lol.
-
@mAz Do you live in Luxembourg? I visited the City about 15 years ago for a day or two. That seems like a really, really fun place to own a OneWheel.
Mine is "ON VEHICLE FOR DELIVERY TODAY"!!!
-
@bmtka Yes I'm from Luxemburg. Cool you were here, where are you from? Next time you come by, let's go ride baby! Congratulations, you'll be part of the revolution hehe. OW rocks like hell. You'll see your face when you open the box.
Happy riding!
@Future-Motion One more OneWheeler!
-
K
Soooooo..end of February app release?
-
@mAz I'm in Montana. Would love to visit Europe again soon. I want to go the the Belgian Grand Prix sometime. How fun would it be to ride the track at Spa-Francorchamps? Would definitely hit you up if I'm ever in the area. Hopefully they'll be letting OneWheels on airplanes again by then.
-
@bmtka @mAz I'm not too far from Francorchamps (area Hasselt in BE) so let me know if you ever meet up there :)
-
@bmtka @KeithVlk Yo yo yo! That would be the greatest. Keep me in touch I'll make sure to be there!

@indutaurus Hi, I also use this app to hide images and videos and also to lock apps. I'm not afraid of others to use my phone now~
Oh fuck off will ya!
