@thegreck I know his 11 does. I too am curious about the 10.5.

@No: I have to try this too!
I understood that the d30 would be your recommendation, but what about the size? in the other thread you wrote that you are not sure if the 11" or the 10.5" would be the correct one and that you had to modify the board a little bit to use the 11"?
I want to order one, but I´d like ot figure that out first...I recommend using the 11" and filing off about 0.5mm from the leading edge of the battery housing, along with keeping the tire below 14 maybe 15PSI, if you don't want to sand anything down, you can drop it to 9 to 10PSI , it shouldn't rub at all, but at that PSI you might be affecting mileage and tire wear, but the ride is super floaty and fun too...
But, regarding 10.5", I just haven't found a perfect match in that diameter yet, the OW was pretty much built around a specific tire size, so finding any decent alternative is a real challenge
-
Hey guys, I too am interested in this tire. i did some digging online. Our Vegas are medium grip MBM tires at 11.5x6.5-6. The 11.5 represents the overall diameter of the tire, 6.5 equals the width and 6 equals the rim diameter. I am trying to understand how the 11" hoosier is rubbing? I also saw online where kart folks get their tires cut down for increased performance. I may have to head over to a kart place to discuss this with them. I would love the hoosier you have in a slick.
-
Look what I found without tread
-
@Earthpilot
Because the shape is rounded, unlike the Vega which is flat.

Yea..I saw that one, I'll see how the tread wears out over the course of a few hundred miles on my tire, if it becomes a major issue, that slick tire would probably be the better, longer-lasting option.
And, what @Earthpilot said is correct, even though the tire is 6.5" wide, it's meant to be mounted on a much wider rim (about 8" I think), which would stretch it out into a flatter shape, but since our rim isn't that wide, it bulges out in the middle.

Thanks for the reply - sad to hear that because I just do not feel comfortable with filing anything down on my onewheel and also I personally feel that a max of 14/15psi ist to less for me (my personal tests showed that 17 is a good minimum for my weight in terms of range).
Also thanks to @Earthpilot pointing out the difference in the specs of the rim diameter, that makes gives me a better understanding for what I am looking for.
@all: If anybody finds a treaded tire with more matching specifications, please post here - @SeeTheInvisible & me are eager to install this on out boards.

From what I understood from your reviews, it seems like the "bulging out in the middle" could be something really preferable, because this less contact makes it more playful to turn and let you carve more extreme (while making it a bit more challenging to master). Did I get that right?

That's it exactly
Regarding PSI, I like riding at higher PSI too, with the Vega I was at 15 for offroad and 20 for everything else, one thing I noticed about the Hoosier is that the sidewalls are significantly more rigid, and the tire feels as if it's riding at a higher PSI. For example, when I first installed it and had it at 10PSI, hitting bumps and cracks had a similar sound/feel to the Vega at 15PSI. This initial rigidity starts to fade slightly after about 10 to 15 miles, but overall it's still much stiffer and requires less PSI than the Vega
I plan on throwing on a new tire every couple hundred miles, and if other people get involved, maybe we'll find a perfect match that doesn't require any modding. One option I'm curious about is finding a tire that's too wide, at maybe 10" to 10.5" diameter, stuffing it on the rim and seeing if a round shape can be forced that way...
-
@No: Thanks again for sharing your experience and thoughts.
regarding rounded shape: good to hear, because this is what I am mostly interested in, increased traction from the treads is just a weclome side benefit for me.
regardig psi: my concern is less about the stiffness and how it feels, because a "looser" feeling with low psi is fine for me. my main concern is just about range which an a certain point of lowering psi significantly gets shorter.
However we will continue searching.

I don't think you need to mod the board if you can find a kart shop.
https://youtu.be/KdVB_n0nuJkIf you mount the tire on the rim and then support the axle with a homemade wood stand, you can do this.
https://youtu.be/sINEUUDTFJw -
Just purchased this tire. I hope, I hope, I hope I picked a winner...
-
@Earthpilot nice! Looking forward to seeing how that works out, the -0.5" on the width compared to the stock tire is interesting, might give it a little more of a rounded shape, I also like the harder compound, good luck!
-
@No That is exactly what i am looking to get out of it, I hope it has the same rounded contour that the treaded one has with more angled turns at higher speeds and good medium grip durability.
-
@Earthpilot one thing about high-speed cornering (with a rounded tire), if you don't lean with your whole body enough, the board will try to roll out from under you and throw you to the ground. I haven't fallen yet due to this, but I've had a couple nasty wobbles mid-carve because my weight wasn't in the "sweet spot". I guess it's kinda like catching an edge with a snowboard.
-
@No Thanks for the heads up. The sweet spot you refer to is what I try to explain to people who get on my board for the first time. I call it being "on axis" both vertically and horizontally. I show them that I can go into a turn and if I stay in that lean over the board, I could go until the low battery pushback occurs and be very dizzy, lol

Hey thanks for sharing this with us!
one gripe I have with the onewheel is how much it tilts and can upset your balance when at high speed and "lane changing" from say concrete to grass or from high to low ground. Does the rounded profile reduce that tendency? If you could post a video of that new tire, I'm sure a lot of us would be grateful :)
-
@mike I think with those types of riding situations you always have to be just a little bit more careful, but yes, with the rounded tire, the transition is much easier to manage, I don't even slow down anymore, I just approach as about a 30 degree angle and the tire does all the work.

I have just ordered 2 pieces of hoosier 11.0X6.5-6 D30A for @SeeTheInvisible and me;-)
should arrive in cw 8... -
Wwr420 @cr4p 28 January 2017, 15:19 UTC
@cr4p I'm running that tire also and here's what I did. I mounted the new tire and reassembled the OW. Then I supported the OW so I could activate the sensors and get the wheel spinning freely off the ground and used the motors power to spin the tire while using file/grinder/sander to remove material until it stopped rubbing.
-
Wwr420 @cr4p 28 January 2017, 23:59 UTC
@cr4p I love the Hoosier tires. I can't say enough about the ride difference a more rounded profile makes. It sounds like the Hoosier slick also has the more rounded profile which is a good option for folks who want to keep a slick but get more nimble turning.
Thank you @No ! -
@wr420 NP! Only thing that worries me about that slick is that it's smaller.......and doesn't look as cool lol. I'd like to see it so I have an idea exactly what that size difference looks like, losing a half inch of ground clearance just won't work for me
-
@No How has your tire held up. I have about 400 miles on mine and it is almost time to change it. I am going to jump up to your size but with the hardest compound it comes in for reduced wear. I think it's D55
-
@Earthpilot It's held up pretty well, the edges of the treads wore out quickly in the first 30-50 miles but it seems like the wear has slowed, but my first treaded tire was the softest compound, it feels like a tire for a toy lol. I have a D30 from Ebay waiting for my V2 and it feels like actual rubber which is nice. As far as I know, the D30 is the hardest compound for the treaded tire, did you find a D55 somewhere? or are you looking into the slicks?
-
@No I'm riding the Hoosier 11.0 6.0-6 A40 tire and the only thing I've noticed about the size difference is it seems I'm riding at pushback pretty much all the time now. I don't know if that's just from riding more aggressively because I have more control but it definitely doesn't look un-cool and I haven't had any incline ride issues due to the half inch difference. It's not the size, man. It's what you do with it.
-
@Hubbitron lol I see
I think rounded tires in general just make the ride better, giving you more confidence on the board, at least that's been my experience. I'll probably give it a try someday, but right now I'm really liking the extra grip on sand and loose terrain
-
@No I tried getting the treaded D55 but I can't find it. I ordered your D30 and it should be here soon. Also, I would like to mention that I have Hubbitrons tire right now and i am getting close to 500 miles on it and i am seeing threads start to appear. Your mileage may vary on it, I am about 200 lbs. The A40 and the D30 are both medium compounds but i am hoping that the extra half inch will allow for more even wear at the edges. Isn't it fun to experiement with these sizes and compounds? Must be what NASCAR feels like but a little slower, lol
-
@Earthpilot Yea..just a little bit slower, but basically the same thing lol
I wish FM would've played around with different tires, they're really holding the OW back from greatness with that flat Vega tire
-
I read a post from someone at FM where they went with the Vega because evryone would have a better time learning to balance on it. They tried others and went with it. I think those of us who modify, whether it be tires, batteries, footpads etc are part of the Onewheel development department. If I ran the company, I would be scanning everything here daily to integrate things into future models.

That makes sense, I mean, the rounded tire is significantly harder to learn on I think. On the Vega, I can ride goofy, it's slower, and a little wobbly, but I can manage. With the rounded tire, it's noticeably harder to balance, I don't even try to ride goofy anymore
-
@No @Earthpilot you guys are on point. And if FM is listening SWAPPABLE BATTERY PACKS PLS
-
@Earthpilot @no Sorry if I'm being lazy, but could you guys give a quick run down regarding the specific tires (and rubber compounds) you have tired and their wear characteristics so far? I'm considering a swap and I'm leaning toward the treaded Hoosier in the A30 compound. I've got over 1000 miles on my original Vega, but it sounds like you guys aren't getting that kind of lifespan.
I'm also concerned that it will be a pain the the ass to file down the profile so it doesn't rub against the edges. I'm hundreds of miles from any sort of serious kart shop. Do you suppose my local tire guys would have the equipment to lathe it and file down the profile a bit?
-
@bmtka I've been meaning to compile all of our tire knowledge into a single tire bible thread...hopefully if it's all in one location people will be more comfortable venturing out further and trying something newer and crazier
-
@No
What you have described is very interesting,
Do you have a video showing how it is to carve with the Hoosier threaded tire?
Thanks -
@Norm Not yet, I want to buy a gimbal sooner or later so I can start making videos, but it probably won't happen anytime soon.

@Earthpilot Thanks for the info, gonna add this to the guide when I get some free time
-
finally i also did it!
when i first tried it, i was only able to pump to around 15psi, before it would rubb on the footpads. the ride was only about 30% as agile as i expected - propably because of the low psi that did not shape the rounding as it could be and on the other side allowing to much squeezing when carving on the edge. it still felt better than the original tire, but i was a little bit disapointed, because i felt like there would be more potential.
however, i consoled myself by looking forward to the advantages in offroad riding (which i can´t do yet, because winter isn´t gone and so it is too muddy).when I recharged it and was ready to go for the second ride @SeeTheInvisible called on the phone, asking about the first ride. i told him that ot still feels better than the original one, but still i am a little bit disapointed because of the unused potential out of the low psi. he encouraged me to sand away a some material of the middle of the tire to be able to put more psi into the tire.
i was not in the mood to do so, but when i went down for a ride, i changed my mind and went to the garage to give it a first try.
in fact i was able to pump it up a little bit more, after removing some material from the middle section of the tire.i went out for a second ride and immediately felt the improvement. it was more agile as before and more playfull to ride. it was a lot of fun, but i decided to return at the half of the way to remove some more material.
the 3rd ride was already close to what i had initially expected it to be in terms of agility!
alltough it is much to early for any kind of wrap up, i already love it. it is more playful, it feels more agile and besides that the look is cooler;-)
but i am still looking forward for the offroad thing and i also do think that i will continue to remove some material (currently i am around at 18-19psi)
thanks @no for providing the inspiration within this thread and thanks @njcustom for the helpfull tire change tutorial!

@cr4p That's so sick!!!
Can someone in Northern CA do this already?
I need to ride one! -

Hitting the sand tomorrow morn. This time with threads. I hope it will perform better than the smoothies. -
@cr4p love the look of board with that combo of pads and tread on. Thanks for the e mail by the way can I ask which Hoosier tyre you have on the board?
I seemingly have a donor board now which I'm going to experiment with and the first thing I want to test is a tread tyre so your updates and info are very useful
Keep up the great work

Hoosier Treaded Kart 11.0X6.5-6 D30A
I am not yet quite sure, but just an idea, maybe @no can also jump in here:
With 11.0 this tire is half an inch smaller then the original (11.5). Still in the original setup it rubbs at the pads at around 15psi, because the tire inflates differently, giving a more rounded shape. now the thesis: if the tire would be another half an inch smaller, than you could pump it up to lets say 22 psi, resulting in an even more rounded shape (which would most probably deliver even more better/advanced riding experience).
just a theory, i am no tire expert at all...what do the others say? -

just a theory, i am no tire expert at all...what do the others say?Yea, in theory I think this is correct. One thing with the Hoosier tires that might affect their shape though, the instructions said to inflate it to 10PSI higher than your goal PSI, and leave it there for 5 or 10 min (don't remember how long) to give it it's proper shape, this might affect the roundness at 15-20PSI...not sure how many of us went through the "shaping" process before installing...
@timvdp It's all about personal preferences, if I had tried one of the clones with the rounded tire first, I probably would've really enjoyed it. But for me, the treads are half the reason I'm using my tire, there have been so many times where I KNEW the stock tire would've just given up and spun out in the mud/sand/gravel, but this softer rubber combined with treads really helps out when the Vega would've slipped and thrown me to the ground.
-
I bet the next version of onewheel will have a custom made tire for it.
-
Look at all of the Hoosier converts. I love my treaded Hoosier. The smaller slick hoosier was quicker to pivot on but the tread is going to go the distance for me.
-
I was wondering if someone could post, a video or some before / after photos, because i dont' think i have seen them of exactly how much "sanding down" of the casings has to be done to give this tire its proper space?
I'm all about the mods. I'm actually really not afraid of much, I've taken apart the basic components of it already, i mean, even if you over sand it, fixing it to re-waterproof shouldn't be that huge of a deal, its just a small plastic box. And the footpads are 1 cheap and 2 easily modable. But I just kind of want a better understanding of how much material is being removed to accomidate the tire....
If there was room for the tire. I'd have done the switch already. I love off-roading and I wheelslip constantly on grass.
-
@Aaron-Broward-FL said in Hoosier Treaded Tire Review:
But I just kind of want a better understanding of how much material is being removed to accomidate the tire....
i did not sand anything down from the board itself, i just put away some material from the middle part of the tire. in guess i removed about 2mm from the middle which is enough to bring it to ~18-19 psi (but you have then no gap at all left between the tire and the pad then)
of course the tire might last a little bit less, but that´s all more than worth the improvements in advanced riding abilities.
(also when i saw leaking tires they were all leaking at the edges and not at the middle) -
since i did a lot of riding during the last two days, i would like to add some points to my first impression, which might be helpfull to some to get a better idea to what to expect from changing to this kind of tire.
-
so far i let three other people try it out, who rode regular onewheels before. all of them were stoked and told me that they immediately noticed the differences in therms of obviuos improved agility and playfulness.
-
i still have very little offroad experience with this tire because of the weather conditions. but what i can definitly say yet is, that it feels more stable in bumpy/offroad terrain. i am quite sure this is because of the rounded profile, because if you hit a certain bump/stone/etc., with the regular tire it would realign the whole board more agressivly, while the more rounded shape of the hoosier allows the board to better find its way without changing the angle of the board as much as the regular tire does.
alltough i definitly recommend this tire to all of my buddys here, i would not automatically recommend the tire to everyone.
this is because it depends on what you are looking for. like in other board sport, there are different preferences for different styles that all have their eligibility. some prefer their board having a "loose" feeling (for more agility), while others prefer a more "straight" feeling.so here is my personal recommendation:
if you are a beginner, if you already are satisfied with how it rides, if you are not really comfortable with board sports in general or if you just like you board going straight and doing mostly long carves (instead of tight ones) - stay with the original vega - it is already a lot of fun!if you are doing a lot of board sports, if you are going offroad frequently, if you like the board to be more playful/agile and if you are a little bit more experienced - definitly give a more rounded shape a try! (for an advanced rider the little bit of more instability in the axis of the rounded shape is veeery little and nothing to consider from my point of view).
anyway, please consider that everyone's opinion is bound to be subjective.

(also when i saw leaking tires they were all leaking at the edges and not at the middle)I did no mods to neither board nor tire and it scrapes. .Scratchy sound very obvious when going slow, but when you speed up its the terrain that I get concerned about.
10 hours of riding the board with the threaded tire on flat park grass and sandy beach. 22psi with very rounded profile. The scraping sound is going away slowly.
More agility (on grass and sand): I make titghter turns. Easier to do backside turns. Cleaner figure eights. Mind you, I am only a beginner with no more than 20hours experience. My kids put more time on it than I do since we got it 5 weeks ago.
Traction on sand: I do have a little better traction on super soft sand but the floatation is not as good. The threaded tire rounded profile puts more pressure in a smaller footprint as opposed to the Vega flatter smootihies. Thats the trade off, traction for floatation.
Next testing Sand scene: Flatter threaded tire 15psi, on smooth sand with less traffic marks (footprints and/or tire).
Next testing Steep Hill grass climbing scene: I will try 22psi and 15psi to climb steep hills where I encounter wheel slips. In my opinion the threaded wheel is a lot looser than stock but it is not necessarily for beginners only. I have seen some kids and adults jump on it and ride away with no ease.
-
I would like to chime in here and address some things about what others have said about the tire and my own experience. I did zero modding to the tire and the board. I run it at around 15 psi and 100% of my riding right now is on sidewalks and roads. This tire pressure really works for me and I am 6 ft 205 lbs. @Aaron-Broward-FL Run the tire, it will fit and keep the pressure at 15 or maybe lower for off roading. People take air out of their tires in vehicles before going off road or on the beach. Treat the board the same way. I would off road at my psi. It feels great on pavement. @cr4p I don't think you will run into a longevity issue with what you did to your tire, minimal at best. I'm on my 3rd tire and the first two still had meat on them in the middle when i changed them out from seeing threads at the edges from always making front side and backside turns. I hope this helps you guys that are on the fence about getting this particular tire. Changing the tire completely altered the ride for me in a good way. It became a different board. Never going back to a Vega
-
So, i used to be happy running my tire at 15. Until recently. I have gotten to be a more experienced rider until the last 2 weeks when i fell off going 2 MPH trying to talk to someone and not paying attention where i was going getting my concussion and yesterday having some sort of mechanical issue.... where after i had a sensor failing according to the app and now the board wont turn on. My freaking shoulder is killing me..... a nice trip to the ER and a few shots and lots of Vicodin later. I still consider myself experienced. But, I'm pretty comfortable and doing a lot of things and I'm pretty agile. And I like play.
I say i consider myself experienced now because a few months ago i tried going up to 19 PSI and it was uncomfortable and to unstable for me. But now, I wouldn't have it any other way. I went riding with some guys that were WAY better than me and it pushed me to ride "harder"
Its the traction on the dirt and the wet grass especially cause in FL grass is constantly wet. Also i get a lot of sand because sand is more common than dirt. And i Spin out. ALOT..... like ALOT ALOT. i am constantly spinning out. I am off boarding for a little bit till my shoulder and probably my concusssion heal. :) my son probably wont be happy, although I haven't even tried to figure out if i can get my 2nd board to fire up without sending back to FM. Or even setup a fix it. I press the power button and it lights up for a second and then shuts off. I tried using the charger... oye. My work is threatening to take my board away :) I'm like not a chance :) too many trips to the hospital :) I'm no quitter.... I just need a functioning board, and no woman distractions. And everything Will be fine. SO back to my point. I got the + on order. And as it appears I have to send at least 1 and probably both in for maintenance. I am probably going to wait for the + and see how it fits with the tire. I think its a safe assumption.... the same... but, who knows a few MM here and there.... would be smart of them to create 4 MM of clearance so we can change tires. Then they can market multiple tires at 300$ a tire. Oh wait that is the FM markup :) on seemingly simple items ;)

first offroad ride and i still love it!
