@sonny123 This is awesome. In my case, every shop I went to said no to helping change or break the bead on my tire. I was able to do the whole change without removing the tire assembly though. Dude at Mr Tire was nice enough to help me seat the bead on the new tire (stubborn AF).
Protip: the screws holding the wire restraints are made out of the softest metal I have ever encountered. If you can remove them without stripping the head, go grab some backups at the hardware store before re-installation.

@Hubbitron
This tool may help popping off the tire.

@sonny123 THANK YOU. I used my kitchen table haha.
-
@sonny123 come to think of it you could probably just use a piece of PVC or a metal mixing bowl or something.
-
@Hubbitron
Honestly, I dunno how you guys can pop off the tire on your own.
Luckily the tire shop nearby will do it happily.
Only problem is, he fights with it like a soccer ball.
My rim now looks camouflage with all the scraps.. -
@sonny123 Don't get me wrong, I questioned my own existence several times during this procedure.

@Earthpilot / Hubbitron HI, I was wondering what slick tire you guys ended up going with? Are you happy with it. I am a ways out on needing a new tire on my V1; however wanted to have my plan b early. I am riding mostly paved trails. Thank you

I'm on pavement 95% of the time and would like to stay with a slick tire. Is the Hoosier slick an improvement over the Vega slick? More grip? Longer wear? Does the Hoosier have a rounded profile versus the flat profile of the Vega. And importantly, if the Hoosier is inflated to 20 psi, will the tire rub?
Just preparing ahead of time to make the best choice for my style of riding.
Thanks!

@wheelking
It's rounded which makes it more agile. Some people like that way.
I tried Hoosier long time ago and went back to Vega same day.
Then again, I'm happy just cruising around at 12-13 mph.
Word of caution when you try Hoosier for the first time.
It'll be quite different, so take it very easy.
It's like standing on a ball and won't go straight.
Being that it's rounded, it will touch the plastic cover at certain psi. -
I rode a stock Vega tire the other day, can't believe how flat and non responsive it is compared to the Hoosier.

I like the drag the slick creates while carving

I put the Hoosier slick on my V1--love it--rides faster, smoother, tighter than the Vega. I'm looking forward to wearing out the Vega on my + so I can justify replacing it with the Hoosier. Breaking the bead sucked. I'm gonna spend the $45 to buy a quarter-midget bead breaker for my future tire changes.

@sonny123 Thanks much
. For my cruising on pavement style of riding, the Vega profile is better for me. -

@shattle Slime is a must. Just yesterday my Hoosier (w/o slime) was at 0 PSI when I left work. Slimed it, filled it up, A-OK.
-
I agree with @shattle slime is something you can't go withought.

@sonny123 Thanks so much for this description!
It makes me want to try the Hoosier--especially because of the "standing on a ball" part.
To me, that's saying the hoosier is taking the core idea of the OneWheel to the next level.
A riding balancing board that moves in all directions, not "just" back and forth.
It's something I have been envisioning all along.
Now I'll have to find a hoosier here in Belgium.But I totally see that the hoosier tire is NOT what you want
if you just want to go cruising and move from A to B in the most efficient way.
The OW is not designed for (that kind of) efficiency. -
@SaturnOne
It really comes down to personal preference.
Rounded shape is more challenging to ride, so it could mean a level up.
To me, carving on Onewheel is not like skateboard.
It's all in body motion and the flat shaped is more than enough.
But I could see how more aggressive riders would enjoy rounded shape even more. -
Sspalding12 @sonny123 8 June 2017, 15:24 UTC
@sonny123 i cannot imagine struggling to stay upright at a light because my tire had a more rounded profile. one of the reasons i abandoned my electric unicycle PHASE OF LIFE. the "relatively" flat aspect of the tire is PERFECT for MY TASTE.... FWIW
-
@spalding12 Agreed. Even after riding daily for nearly a year and a half, I STILL struggle to stay balanced while waiting at a light or especially at stop signs when I have to look back and forth to check traffic while I'm stopped. It throws off my balance enough with a flat wheel, I also can't imagine trying to do that "balanced on a ball."
