I operate the sales floor at the oldest and most experienced eBike Store in Portland, Oregon. We sell Onewheel products there as well as premium electric bikes.

Part of my enjoyment of the float that we all love is not having our parts breaking off the board. Particularly the fender. I have made a magnetic fender mount for the Future Motion fender that holds on as needed and will allow detachment when desirable. You roll the board and torque it in any direction and it comes off. Currently we are testing the working prototype now.

It really looks promising. I developed this initially due to pine needles and leaves jamming between the wheel and the fender. I would need to remove the fender every ten minutes just to clear the jam. For more info: rcyders@yahoo.com

That's really cool and considerate for your customers! I would still forward the complaint to FM, maybe as a dealer you will have a little more clout than your average customer.
Even though the magnetic mount is a huge improvement, it's not exactly a complete solution. In a perfect world the fender would not come off except when you actually want it to, and it wouldn't be fragile in the event that the OW lands on it

Yes FM, please use different (better) plastic for the fenders. I assume you can even use the same mold. Dirt bike fender type of plastic would work great! While you're at it, how about color choices for the fender?

Your wish has been granted! I decided to make some cheap fenders out of a proper material, so I melted down some dirtbike fenders and made these! (Just kidding, they are vac formed)

@njacobs I did a small batch of these as an experiment and the leftovers are for sale. I guess if there is significant demand I may come up with a slightly more professionally executed version, maybe introduce different colors, polycarb version etc.

I feel you are on to a great fender option with the “FlexFender” design. I will be keeping an eye on this one.... Great work!

    OW XR: 30PSI / 20.3 MPH

I too like the flexible/durable fender idea. Carbon fiber looks great and can be durable for the right circumstances but the onewheel is a terrible application when it is guaranteed to go sliding across the pavement at some point. Magnetic mounted fenders that pop off instead of breaking are not great option either...you don't see any dirt bike or mountain bike parts that take that approach.

@cbr-954rr True, but their wheels aren't as sexy as the OW, nor do they have the problem of accumulating a pile of shit that will send you flying. Magnetic fender FTW.

@ventoriffic when we ride offroad, I constantly have to wait for my buddy to retrieve his magnetic fender when it bounces off with no crash involved. Inevitably he gives up and straps it to his backpack and finishes the ride with muddy footpads and pants. I've only had to remove my fender once while riding, taking less than 2 minute with the hex key I keep in my pack. Between the magnetic fender and no fender, I'd choose no fender.

IMHO the only "sexy" onewheels are when they are brand new. I give the people that actually ride and beat the hell out of their boards way more respect.

@makermarc I'm interested in one of these fenders too. My FM fender has broken several times and I don't think I can repair it anymore :(

@makermarc are you able to choose how opaque the fenders are? I’m thinking a slightly opaque fender may glow very well from properly placed LED’s. The clear one may glow well already, but something with a little shading in it could carry the light better.

I'd like one too - but in black if you can swing it. Clear doesn't make much sense IMO as it will soon be mud brown from the inside.

Also, I recommend altering the design slightly if you don't want FM coming after you for copyright / patent violation. Yours looks like an exact replica, which is great but you're exposing yourself to unwanted and unnecessary legal problems. Just change it enough so that it's your "own" design and you should be good to good. Just my two cents.

I like your take on the flexible fender, I'd be in for a black fender also when they are ready.

@ventoriffic The white ones are opaque, it just doesn't look that way with the lighting in the picture. I'm sure they would carry light very well.

@makermarc Very cool! What is the price point? I'd be interested in black or a dark blue (Yamaha dirt bike blue). Or I suppose if the price is right, the white may work - I would just paint it.

@cascadewheeler Hmm. yea the dirt-bike fenders are made of polypropylene. A perfect candidate for a fender. the only issue is Uv degradation and oxidation. I bet that can be fixed by dipping a mold in a thin protective layer of some sort. It is super cheap and way better than the piece of trash known as the FM fender. It can be made with CnC or injection molding(probably the Injection). It is very strong and flexible meaning it will not break on crashes. this will prevent it from touching the tire but still be strong. I think it would not be difficult to make for onewheel. I might even make my own from a 3d model mold. I really hope onewheel fixes this. This has gotten a lot of attention so maybe FM will notice. We just need to annoy Future Motion enough into noticing us. Thanks for the idea.

Do a search for "Plain Black Mud Guard 24" - Set of 2" on Amazon and you'll find what I used. The metal is 1" angle aluminum. The metal and screws were purchased a Lowes. I don't remember the details of the screw size.

@njacobs I used a placemat made from Polypropylene (dirtbike fender plastic) and might use that. It will probably break because I did an awful job. But, i will try to make the mudflap fender. Thanks.

Tried a mini fender and that broke too. FM made me sad. Maybe eventually they will make a Polypropylene injection molded fender. That could be Insanely strong and still cheap.

@makermarc Yea I was thinking about making fenders using Vac forming. I just don't have a vaccuform machine or a fender to form off of. I will pay 30 dollaroos for that. How Strong is it? How much would they go for. I want to use them for flight fins maybe. Just don't want to pay 130 dollars or 85 for a fender that will break.

@makermarc @NJacobs Will Future motion see this? How do We let them all know we hate the Fm fender? Is there a business email we can complain to? You can literally take Polypropylene sheets(dirt-bike fender material) and make a mold of a original fender. That would literally be It. makermarc Do you think you can do this? This is all it takes. There are no vaccum forming places where I live so maybe one of you can just start mass producing these because they are so simple.(by mass producing I just mean make a lot. You don't have to make thousands)
