EPAMD’s
Okay, so my EPAMD Permit is in the mail now. The unfortunate aspect to this is it basically means I now have to follow rules I did not previously believe applied to me. For reference--
The following rules apply to the use of Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Devices (EPAMDs):
• EPAMDs are allowed in the system only at the same times and on the same trains as bicycles. This is generally during off-peak times or in the reverse commute direction. Consult the BART schedules in brochures and stations, or on www.bart.gov for details.
• EPAMDs are not allowed in the first car of any train.
• No more than one EPAMD is allowed in any doorway area. EPAMDs are not allowed to enter
crowded cars regardless of the time of day.
• EPAMDs are not allowed on either stairs or escalators. Use the elevators to get in and out of the station and onto the platform. If an elevator is out of service, go to the next station. Do not use the stairs or escalators under any circumstances.
• EPAMDs must be turned off and pushed or pulled in the stations. When entering an above- ground station, the EPAMD user must dismount and turn off his or her device before reaching the faregate, or earlier if there is any heavily congested area. When accessing below-ground stations, the EPAMD user must dismount at the street level before entering the street elevator. The EPAMD may never be ridden or powered up in the paid area or platform, or on the train.
• EPAMDs must be ridden at no more than a walking pace on the parts of the BART property where riding is allowed. Whether ridden or pushed, yield to pedestrians.
• While on board trains, EPAMD users must secure their devices in the seating or standing area near the doors or in the wheelchair space if it is not needed by a wheelchair user. Hold the device. Yield the priority seating to seniors and persons with disabilities if it is needed. Cooperate with bicyclists and customers with strollers and luggage when using the space near the doors.
• EPAMD users must not move their devices down the aisle to relocate within the car, nor may they take the device between cars on the train.
• EPAMD users may not allow their device to block an aisle or doorway. Allow other riders to enter, exit, and move within the train car.
• The user must secure the device so that it does not roll with the motion of the train. EPAMDs should be positioned perpendicular to the front of the train to minimize its propensity to roll. Use the kick stand if possible. Chock the wheels to prevent rolling.
• EPAMD must be left behind on the train in case of an evacuation.
• EPAMDs may be parked at bicycle racks, in bicycle lockers, at motorcycle parking spaces, or
in bike stations
• Carry your permit at all timesSeveral of these never even occurred to me as being necessary in the first place. I KNOW that most cyclists do not follow many of them (not allowed to enter crowded cars regardless of the time of day-- yeah, right), so hopefully I'll be able to get away with ignoring some of the more asinine ones too. But if you are planning to take your OW on any public transportation I would highly recommend you do the due diligence and check up on your system's rules first.

@a_onekatie I got half way and gave up reading due to exhaustion... its easier for me to pretend I dont know any of this and ride sensibly ;)

@Daymos LOL
These were the standouts to me:
• No more than one EPAMD is allowed in any doorway area. EPAMDs are not allowed to enter
crowded cars regardless of the time of day.• EPAMDs are not allowed on either stairs or escalators. Use the elevators to get in and out of the station and onto the platform. If an elevator is out of service, go to the next station. Do not use the stairs or escalators under any circumstances.

Ok, so I tried my first commute on a Pint today, and it didn't end well!
To put this into context, I've only been riding Onewheels for a few weeks, so I'm not an experienced rider by any means, but I'm not sure this was down to anything I did.
I bought an XR a few weeks ago, whilst waiting for my Pint to arrive, so I've ridden the XR to and from work a couple of times with no issues.
Today was my first commute on the Pint, which arrived last week. I noticed that the pushback was much harder than on the XR, but I've not tried to push through it - just kept to the speed with the nose in the air.
The journey into work was ok, but I was riding home through a park on the way home, probably about 4 miles into my ride, with a full charge at the beginning of the ride, and it suddenly cut out and nosedived at about 14-15mph.
I hit the ground pretty hard (see the pic of my helmet) and despite having elbow pads on, grazed my elbow and cut my fingers.
I had the app running at the time, and it said that there was an error 16. The lightbar was just flashing red. After restarting it, it worked ok again, but I kept the speed down (partly as I still felt a bit dazed from the fall).I've just contacted FM support, which is what the error 16 message said to do, so I'll post their response when I get one. Has anyone else experienced an issue like this?
I don't want to scare anyone, but just to say - be careful out there, and always wear protection!
-
@J0nKn1ght oh wow, hope you're okay!
I had my pint for just over a month before I felt prepared for my commute (My husband will still tell you I'm not ready yet lol). I'm not sure what exactly happened to you there, but my absolute topmost speed to date is only 12.5 MPH. What mode were you riding in? @14-15 MPH why don't you think it was the pushback that did it?

I'm sure this applies to more larger objects like scooters so yo umay get away with hoolding your pint like a briefcase

@J0nKn1ght
Have not had that yet on the Pint. But the pushback is almost too strong when compared to the OW standard size line (V1, + and +XR). I start pushback at 14.1 and the nose pushes really high by 15mph. Looking forward to what @Future-Motion has to say. Heal up but keep riding... -
@a_onekatie thanks Katie. I was on skyline. I thought that the way pushback worked was that it would steadily increase to the point that your tail was on the ground.
This was definitely just a cut out of the motor, which is when the nose hit the deck. The only information that I've been able to find about error 16 (posted on this forum) was that it indicates that the motor couldn't communicate with the battery.
My hip took some of the impact as well, so I'm pretty achey. Hoping that I've not got concussion, as my helmet dents show how hard I hit the ground.
I think that your probably wise to stick to redwood. I think the problem was that I'd got used to the speed of the XR.
Probably won't be riding for a while, and I can't wait for the comments that my colleagues at work will have when they see my battle scars! -
@J0nKn1ght I've got almost 3000 miles on my + and my XR combined and with a top speed of 19 mph, my max is 15 mph. I even have a watch running the OW app connected to my phone to make sure I don't go over that. Extrapolating that to the 16 mph max speed on the Pint, I would say to not go over maybe 12/13 mph max. Of course, this all depends on rider weight, incline, wind, etc.
Pushback is telling you that the motor is close to not being able to keep the wheel under you. When that happens, you'll know it (as you do now). How do I know that? Because my nosedive at 600 miles into my OW career happened at 21 mph. Let's just say, it was not pretty. LOL
I, myself, have only felt low battery pushback. But if you're cruising at 19 mph and it tries to pushback (at least on the + and XR versions), it's really quite subtle.
Anyway, besides having the watch to keep check on my speed, somehow my body won't even let me go past 14/15 mph. I can just feel when I'm crossing that line.
Since that fall at 600 miles, I've had 2 close calls, both at low speeds trying to accelerate too quickly, but my fangs saved me.
Heal up and hop back on, but definitely take it easy and try for no pushback.
-
@OneDan @a_onekatie Having slept on it, I think that it probably was my fault. It happened when I had just moved off a level path onto a slight incline, and I think that I might have shifted my weight forward to compensate for the change, whilst it was still giving me a speed pushback.
I guess that'll teach me not to try and go the same speed as the XR on a Pint. -
@J0nKn1ght Ouch, take care, hopefully FM will be able to put your mind at rest as to what happened.

One full week of commuting in the books!
- 14 Miles logged
- 14 MPH new top speed
- Reprimanded twice by security guards
- Encountered one OW+ (and two “other” electric skateboards)
- asked by one scooter rider WTH I’m riding
- permit in the mail
- calloused hand
- no accidents or mishaps at all!
Absolutely loving every second of it!!!!
-
Light rain today, ain’t keeping me down! Got pretty wet, but seriously surprised by Pint’s grip, no slipping at all!
-
@a_onekatie For me, you're probably the best person to ask this because of your new board, but does your OW get scratched from general use, so like no crashes or what not, mostly just dismounting or things getting kicked up from the tire? Or is it fairly scratch free?
-
Ssinah @DashinglyHunter 16 September 2019, 20:25 UTC
@DashinglyHunter I know you didn't ask me but I'm gonna give my own answer nonetheless (◔‿◔)
The bumpers are advertised as wear and tear parts and I don't think you can ride without scratching those. The side bars are a different story, though you can certainly scratch those too and I did that big time. Wasn't particularly careless, just inexperienced and I've been benched since.
So my to cents, don't be concerned too much about scratching the board. Just stay safe -
@DashinglyHunter oh my board is utterly wrecked already!!!! 🤣😂
I’m sure if I had been more experienced when I first got it, it would be in much better shape today. But yeah, I have huge gouges in my bumpers and my side rails are scratched and dented to sh**, even my rail guards have a few big tears. My fender and handle too are scratched.
But, it’s a board. It gets used. And (as several pros have assured me 😉) it holds up. So I figure I can’t complain too much and, ultimately if it bothers me I can always replace those parts. And it’s been confirmed that we can even have our rails replaced by FM, just note you do have to send the whole board in.
-
@a_onekatie
My plan is to use the rail guards even though at first I didn’t want to put them on the board, I’m gonna take my time to avoid air bubbles. And I have a lot of confidence in my self at the moment, so I hope I’m not to confident in my self. 😂 -
@a_onekatie yeah, mine is pretty thrashed too. but oh well, like you say... i can just replace parts later if i want it to look new again. but for now, i'm good.
-
@DashinglyHunter I would suggest riding on grass or soft dirt at first. One of my biggest mistakes, aesthetically speaking, was learning to ride on gravel. Oh and don’t let your 11 year old nephew on it either 😉
-
@a_onekatie Luckily, I don’t have any younger siblings, or youngins that would want to ride it. I thought about starting indoors but now thinking about it, if I fell off and the board slipped, there it goes into the wall. 🤣
I’ll definitely start out in my back yard, it’s flat and has some good soft grass.
Bonus: if I wipe out my security camera might catch it lol
-
Just saw this on the OneWheel subreddit 🤣

Sorry I've been absent, but i finally got my pint 1 week ago and I've been commuting on it daily. I put at least 10 miles a day in on the board.( a full charge gets me about 10.5 miles ) commuting is a blast, it's like nothing I've ever riden. It's so damn smooth compared to the eboards I'm used to, and so much more nimble too. It's perfect for my ride due to sh*tty sidewalks and a nice little dirt path that's a thrill to ride. I'm almost to 100 miles and I cant wait to hit 1000. 10/10 purchase![)
-
@TyDie also after one week I'm at, 79 miles logged, 18.9 mph top speed and I finally learned how to carve!
-
@TyDie 18.9 damn son be careful there!
-
@DashinglyHunter lmao nice!

SSpaceTim @a_onekatie 18 September 2019, 01:40 UTC
@a_onekatie I'm commuting as well and had a light rain commute today too. I'm in Portland, OR so I'm expecting a lot more rainy commutes. I put some electrical tape over the power outlet hole until I get a plug. The wheel gripped fine, though I wasn't trying to push it.
My commute is 3.7 miles each way and takes just under 30 minutes. It uses about 40% of my battery and regens about 5%, so net 35% use. I think I'm getting around 11 miles of range. Though I did take air out of the tire to soften the bumps and that destroyed my range, so I put it back up to 20psi.
-
SSpaceTim @DashinglyHunter 18 September 2019, 01:45 UTC
@DashinglyHunter Like the others, I have smashed up my board pretty good. This is my first OneWheel. It adds character.
-
@a_onekatie I didnt even realize I was going that fast until I checked the app at home. It didnt feel sketchy at all but that could be because I'm only 130 lbs
-
@TyDie was that in Skyline? That’s the one ride mode I haven’t really tried yet. Have you been getting any pushback?
-
Had a bike messenger today call me out for having the most colorful OW he’d ever seen. He said it “looks less home made that way.” LOL
-
@a_onekatie Speaking of color, I plan on looking into possibly sticker bombing my fender, or painting it with the help of my brother cause he knows how to use paints and such. Three days away from my pint being shipped I'm getting super excited.
-
@DashinglyHunter oh mine is totally sticker bombed:
Congrats on your incoming shipment!
-
UUTrider @a_onekatie 24 September 2019, 03:03 UTC
@a_onekatie
Once I get mine and figure out how to ride it . . . . there's a guy in town does custom wrapping and painting. I'll figure out something for him to put on the fender on mine.
My boss has named my board "Denied".
She says that's because it's what she's going to say when I call in sick with a broken hip or leg.
