is there any truth behind using JWXR batteries being inherently more dangerous than stock?
i dunno, but i got the chip! I imagine FM capped it for a reason. I'm not familiar enough with modern battery fabrication enough to speculate well. I imagine things like the films used to fabricate the cells may be thinner to accommodate for capacity in the same space, but that might make the cells brittle or otherwise prone to failure.
Did you buy the battery pack as well?
-
@Senior-Coffee yeah of course. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet, weather has been rainy af here in Seattle

@Senior-Coffee who's asking?

@Senior-Coffee sry i had my first interaction with customer service recently. Naturally I'm suspicious and unusually cynical about the world... We are desperate and alone; Mote adrift in a meaningless void... Also, no I didn't buy the battery. They should dump those pcb schematics as well as the gcode into a piece of literature and publish it open source. Not even the government will be able to silence it.
-
@NotSure huh
-
@Swinefeaster just kidding about the meaningless void stuff if thats u mean lol.
-
@NotSure I was worried about you there lol
-
@Swinefeaster lol no i'll survive... i'm fueled by vengeance.
-
I'm actually personally pretty excited about the gt, just something to look forward to later. The pintx seems like nothing special though, same as a pint with jw upgrade
-
@Swinefeaster i'm sure there are folks that are really excited by it. frankly, i wish i was too. But those folks likely had the chance to enjoy their prior purchase thoroughly, amortizethem appropriately, and enjoy a reasonably stable resale market for the period of their warranty. Both my new purchases were simultaneously deprecated. Ouch!
I reached out. Their first response was confusing, which i pointed out in a reply, after which they apologized for initially misunderstanding me, but even after that faux pas, my discontent still wasn't worth something like a meager pair of rail guards. nothing in fact to sooth the sting for a prior customer whom felt slighted.
I would have preordered the GT on the spot lol. my third onewheel in less than a year... i got chocolates from the audi dealership after a year. any salesmen in the house care to explain, cuz i don't get it. that in-house expense would equate to something like a 0.4% coupon for an existing customer, twice over, both within the warranty period. Double ouch! easily an order of magnitude less than your average price match. lololol... K...
It was enough to quell my urge for another toy. I'll wait to see if someone cracks their ip in the meantime. should a viable competitor come about, they risk me giving them my money instead. that's the free market right? a bird in hand...

so i finally got a chance to apples-to-apples test my new jwxr battery on the xr with my kiilguards installed. after my usual 9 mile loop, i was usually limping back home around 10% battery left. i came home at 60% instead! so fair to say that it about doubles my range. i could have done the whole thing twice, if i didn't have to work lol.
some caveats:
- the battery indicator jumps around a bunch, sometimes just back up as much as 10%.
- when charging, i get error 21 "charger connected, please unplug to ride" which is pretty annoying and constantly pops up on my phone. i have to disconnect my phone from my onewheel while it's charging.
jw confirmed these are both expected.
other that that, it's working pretty damn sweet so far!

Very cool. I did 25.1 miles yesterday and still had 33% battery left. I enjoy having the chip installed in my XR. I continue to get correct battery percentage with the big battery pack. It appears that mostly everything works in the app with a couple exceptions. Range remaining and Regen appear to be off but I've never really paid attention to those anyway. I also just placed my order for a set of Kiil Guards suspension. I have suspension on my EUC and it makes a world of difference so looking forward to having it on the XR. -
@Senior-Coffee yeah i tried riding my xr for a week without kiilguards and it felt really weird. especially jumping over stuff was super sketchy, and it was so much easier to get into a nosedive.
-
in other news, last night i installed the jw pint battery too. the instructions for that were non existent, and so i had to wing a couple things. i ended up putting the ffm chip on the left side among the cables, since the wires going into to it didn't go from the right as in the xr. used my big soldering gun to cut off the housing pieces that were in the way. and i had the right soldering iron and flux now for the little stuff, so that turned out way better than last time. and it works too which is nice.

I'm very interested in a Pint X vs JW Pint / Quart range test. Of course the X will be faster. From personal experience with battery packs from both the Chibattery and JW Battery, I can say that their battery packs are the real deal with plenty of power. I think I'm going to change my mind and do a JW Pint. My JWXR / FFM works flawlessly and the performance / range is awesome.
Please post the performance and range stuff when you get a chance. -

@Lia
It's crap like this that has sealed the deal for me.
I'm DONE with anything Future Motion produces - the Right to Repair issue along with going after repair shops, along with bricking their boards with 'safety' updates has finished me.
This is a company so 'concerned' with safety that Fangs are a $100+ dollar add-on item.
I'm sending my board to JW for work, but should it not be salvageable, I'll part it out and buy and EUC or Baja Board.
God knows how many people the past year have stopped me and asked about getting a OneWheel.
My single word answer is 'DON'T!' - not until the Right to Repair issue is resolved in the purchaser's favor.
FM can suck it.

today my daughter got thrown onto the pavement with the jw pint battery. she was ok but a little scratched up and shaken. no pushback or anything, it just turned off. i wasn't expecting battery to be depleted since my jwxr was at 62% and we we almost back from an 8 miles ride. i connected to her pint and it read 15% charge and 49v. i rode it again real slow and a few feet later it just turned off on me again. she said she never felt any pushback.
with a stock battery, the pint properly gave pushback when it was low. even my jwxr gave strong pushback when i tested the range and went really low (never felt pushback before on the xr, so i was happy that it worked correctly). but now this new pint behavior has good me a bit distrustful.
let's see what jw says.
