Travel case/bag
-
On that note, how do people travel with these? Do you check it in a bag? Can you carry it on a plane as-is?
-
When I travel, my Onewheel is my hand carry item. It fits in the overhead compartment. If I ever had to check it in, I would pack it in the Onewheel box.
-
Have you ever had trouble w/ TSA since it has a motor?
-
TSA will probably scan your Onewheel twice. Right after that first X-ray machine they might put your board on another X-ray machine. Hopefully they are curious enough to let you show them how it works.
-
@Carlo when you took it overhead, was it a bigger plane? i'm flying a regional jet this week and worried that it wont fit in the smaller compartments.
-
@forzabucks Please let us know your experience. I'm flying next week and am considering taking my OW. I don't want to take it "naked" and then have to somehow end up checking it.
-
I've taken several trips and stored my Onewheel in the overhead compartment every time. I guess the smallest plane was Southwest Airlines and I was the last person to board on a full plane but there was still room in the overhead compartments. I was more worried about getting other passengers luggage dirty so I used a hoodie to wrap my board. If you need to check it in I would use the box. If you are extra rich buy an extra seat :)
-
@Carlo So you just carried your OW through the airport, then threw it up on the X-ray conveyor belt like another piece of luggage? Any issues whatsoever?
-
Have traveled with OW a few times. Couple of thoughts
- Lithium Batteries - I used this as a reference - http://phmsa.dot.gov/safetravel/batteries
Future Motion folks can check my math, but I estimated 48V * 3.5A * .5hrs = 84Wh. .5hrs is conservative estimate on charge time. FAA allows installed battery range of between 100 and 160Wh, so seems to be fine.
-
Overhead - works fine whenever roll aboard bags will work, so I have been taking it on and simply putting into the overhead.
-
Checked baggage - trying to work on a solution now for an overseas trip...Pelican case seems like obvious choice, but my concern is that it attracts a bit too much attention, so looking for large rolling bag and then some combo of foam blocks + towels + tape.
-
@lynnpreston I rolled around the airports with my luggage in tow :) baggage claim is the best.
Yeah the conveyor X-ray then TSA will put it on a table X-ray where we all can see what's inside. -
@lynnpreston just walk up and run it through with the rest of the carry on...you are more likely to be asked to demo and I've had to stop to have the OW swabbed, but this is mostly because I look pretty suspicious.
-
I got a roller back to check and put padding all around the inside. Fit in perfect. @forzabucks
-
@MichaelW and no problems checking it? Do you have pics of your setup that you could share? I'm obviously over-worried for my first time travelling with this, but I know that the place i'm going to will be perfect for the OW.
-
@shaunabe I will post a pic soon! Have to get all the shit together!
-
@MichaelW bump =)
-
Here ya go! I use the 1 inch foam to go around the sides and protect the board. There are many options that would work for packing material. Just depends what you think is best. The important part is that it stays in place (on all sides) and protected because we all know those baggage guys are like Honey Badgers! Hope this helps!!
@shaunabe @forzabucks

Here is the link to this bag. I would check but some airlines would let it pass as its only a few inches difference from regulation.

Fuck! I think that one is now sold out now! Look for it other places or try this one... Its close enough...
This is where I bought the bag originally. Maybe they will ship to you or if you are in LA you can pick one up.
Tell the main owner guy its the 30 inch Walmart bag that fits the OneWheel Skateboard. $35http://www.yelp.com/biz/f-and-m-gallery-luggage-outlet-los-angeles
-
Thanks @MichaelW. Going to try something similar with foam + industrial bubble wrap :)
-
Just picked up this bag from Patagonia. It's 28" and the OW easily fits inside, with room to throw a couple other things in. The bag is extremely durable and weighs just 2 lbs empty, and can also attach backpack straps, making it much easier to carry.
I also love that it's water resistant, which is important if you need to check it or have it out of your hands. Lots of cool color options too. It's called the Black Hole 90L duffel.

pop the onewheel in and lets see it.

@veryous you asked and you shall receive:

Plenty of room to add pads and a helmet too.
-
I used a bag similar to this one on a trip to Hawaii and the Onewheel is HEAVE to sling over your shoulder and pull some other luggage. I ended up with a bag with wheels on one end and that makes going through the airport much more manageable.
-
@forzabucks thank you sir. I think this might be the way to go for me when I travel.
@jim I think the secret is ride to the security check and gate with it. =)
-
A cheap women's stretchable tube top would make a good wheel cover :-) I checked mine in a large backpack/duffle bag - which worked out just fine.
-
M
@jeff8v7 did you try out the tube top plan? i'm looking for something to just cover the tire and a tube top sounds like a great idea... i had also considered a neoprene sheet with velcro on the ends to just wrap around the wheel. anyone else who has a good solution for this?
-
S
Just flew Frontier with mine from Orlando to Denver, they made me check it at the gate.. It looked like it would fit on the overhead but I didn't want to argue. It didn't cost anything so I was happy.
-
@jeff8v7 did you gate check it in a bag or out in the open?
-
T
@forzabucks Very cool - but does the wheel poke into your back? Is it comfortable to walk?
-
T
Wrap the wheel in a sheet of "Press and Seal" plastic wrap. Sticky on one side, smooth on the other.
-
@MrMark I didn't try the tube top yet, but I'll see if I can find one this weekend. :)
-
@forzabucks I checked mine inside a big backpack. The advantage was that I could carry it easily through the airport & still manage regular luggage.
@techmms It's pretty comfortable to carry in a well padded backpack. I thought it would poke me in the back, but I didn't feel that at all.
-
@forzabucks Thanks to your post I just ordered a Patagonia Black Hole 90L. The fact that it has backpack straps and can fold into its own bag sealed the deal for me.
Now I just need the Onewheel

Just tried out this sweet affordable option. Only $24!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004BR6HGY?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00
Used similar bag designs on sets for larger cameras / lighting equipment and thought it be a perfect fit for the OW... fits nicely, with a pouch for the charger and space to spare. I was worried when I saw the specs being 10 x 10 but its perfect for my needs.
-
Wow! Good bag Good price @braswell ! I may have to pick one up :)
-
Ttomtnt @braswell 18 November 2015, 07:39 UTC
@braswell can you carry that thing on a plane or too big?
-
Nice find, @braswell!
-
@tomtnt Good question!
And if not, is there enough space inside to put (enough) bubble wrap for protection if you have to board it?
-
@braswell I just ordered one. Thank you for the find!
-
Bbraswell @tomtnt 18 November 2015, 21:50 UTC
@tomtnt @Polle Haven't tried it on the plane yet... but its not much larger than a normal duffle. Plus you can "condense" the shape with the straps.
And yes there's plenty of room for foam or clothing to toss in as well :)
I have a trip coming up to NY next week and trip to London for christmas, not sure what I'll do with it just yet considering my real carry-on will be my drone backpack and camera equipment haha I need to figure out a solution quick!
I wonder if they will just let this be my "Personal item" with no case so I just keep it front of my seat between my legs?
-
@braswell I have traveled several times with my Onewheel on airplanes and most likely they will not let you put it between your legs under the seat in front of you as one end of the board will stick out where it may block the pathway for quickly exiting the row. It does fit easily in the overhead bins in most planes and you can gate check it if you happen to get on a regional jet with tiny overheads.

Update with that bag- unfortunately Delta didn't even let me step past the security gate with that thing lol
It could be due to the holiday season and the plane was extremely packed, other passengers had to place their carry-on's under at last minute.
That being said I packed it nicely with my clothing and slapped a fragile sticker on it lol, it held up well :)
