2021 Update: Better Board Shoes Make for Better Riding!
-
I am just starting out on my OW journey and I am loving it so far. A big jump in confidence was moving to a better gripping board shoe so that I am connected to the OW. Really makes a difference on my heel side turns which are normally not as strong as toe side. I must say I love the carve now!!!!
-
OH YES! there is a r.e.a.l.l.y. big difference if you change shoes.. what brand/model are you wearing? nike shoes are ok. though i get the occasional disconnect, when doing tight curves (luckily, my balance is quite good so i manage to stay on board without any problem). but i have to say: i got amazing feedback and "foot-feel" wearing these, they got a pretty thin sole:
you can grab them here: http://www.boxfresh.com/footwear-c2/sparko-c19/sparko-p5922
(and no, i'm not sponsered or anything. just love, truely love them for skating over all..)
a bit pricey though.. -
@LidPhones Shoes make a huge difference for me. Once I found the right pair it was night and day better. For me Vans Pro were the ones. No more low speed disconnect.
-
Vans are awesome! Anything flat bottom with a thin layer of rubber from your foot to the board.
-

I agree I just wear some Vans, or any flat bottom shoe works great.
-
I use Nike dunk sb (skate board) sneakers.. they're extremely comfortable, flat, flexible, and they have hundreds of color options....
-
Agree, same thing applies to electric skateboards as well. Anything with a thin sole and little to no cushioning is ideal. The worst are tennis shoes, all the cushion reduces board control.
-
@Zero Man, shoulda worn Chucks when I went for my test ride yesterday.
-
I highly recommend springblades they help smooth out the bumps and they cover the sensors perfectly. I use them 100% of the time ![alt text]( image url)
-
@Aaron-Broward-FL Pretty sure you're trolling, but I would totally try these. Will either provide amazing suspension or unexpected dismount on weight transfer.
@njcustom Dunk SB's are pretty great. I ordered a pair on someone on here's recommendation, maybe it was yours. They have the right amount of cushion in the right areas and feel really snuggy on the board. Seem more durable than most other skate shoes, too.
-
@bmtka sb's are extremely durable. I call them the forever sneaker because if you wear them like a normal person they will literally last and look new forever lol.. top quality sneaker for sure
-
SB's are super solid and my go to choice also. They are great for manuevering the board. I can also vouch for these if your board didnt get you enough looks:
-
@SC720 I like the high ankles on those. First thing I did on my test ride was drive the OW straight into my ankle. It never occurred to me to protect that...
-
@1woman1wheel While awesome for ballin 90's style they are no good for workin a onewheel. They would protect your ankles and pretty much your lower leg too they are so damn high lol.
Although stopping your board in front of a group to pump up your shoes and then taking off again is hilarious.
-
@bmtka I can assure you I do not troll. I have had 2 spinal fusions, and believe me, when it comes to any benefit to relief to my lower back pain.... I am not joking!!!!!!
I wear these shoes... Not in this color... Pretty often. At first I wasn't wearing them on the OW based on forum posts, but then I tried them after I got used to riding and never turned back..., I absolutely love em. -
@1woman1wheel I use High ankle shoes... Basketball shoes for my son as he is learning, when you wipeout as you are falling off, you can hit your ankles and with no meat, that can smart :)
-
@Aaron-Broward-FL That. Is. Awesome. Now I really do want to try them. I bet they completely change the whole feel of the ride. Do you find that the heal and toe sit flat enough for good control?
-
@Aaron-Broward-FL I have a pair to try on the OW but I am a little concerned about feeling disconnected. I can appreciate the added suspension provided by the springeblades though. I will give them a try to see how they feel and work....
-
Oh yeah. You feel 100 connected, and in 100 control, the tension isn't that loose. Remember you have 200 lbs. in my case bearing down on little slices of plastic, so it takes some of the jolt out of the hit but your not bouncing off the board. Like I said, it comes recommended. I'm not sure it's worth $150 to everyone to run out and buy a pair if you don't need em. But, if you want my opinion of the ultimate ride... That's it, it's a personal thing.
-
@LidPhones looking forward to some validation :)

I have ridden over all terrain, well n Florida, no snow, but grass dirt, rocks, hills, ect. The weight of a person is the Same in fact it is greater on springblades because you have the same weight on smaller surface area and the friction coefficient is actually higher so you are less likely to slip or move. but, I have never come close to sliding a foot in any direction. I love em. I'm wearing them in the 1 video I shot :) I don't have a close up. Thanks @LidPhones
-
Some pretty good prices on Nike skate shoes.
Port Authority, going out of business SALE. -
@sonny123 Great deals... Thank you for sharing the link.
-
Found some Better Shoes.....
-
@LidPhones Those are nice.
-
@thegreck ... Thanks. They look good and in my size 12 ski
-
@Aaron-Broward-FL
These are cool. I picked some up. They definately give you more movement and contriol, but take some getting used to. Im going to try them out tonight. Thanks -
@wheeler let me know
-
@Aaron-Broward-FL
Definately a big difference! I wish I would have got the springblades before I bought my crappy Lakai sneakers. Your foot stays connected. The skate sneakers dont have any flex to stay on the board at all times. Out of the box the springs just work. Any other shoe you have to have broken in to stay connected. I got the Razors at a good price. It feels like you have more control leaning because youre not worried about disconnecting. Thanks for the info on these sneakers. They work awesome for me!! ![0_1466872671119_image.jpeg](Uploading 100%) -
@wheeler I also put the dr sholes gels inserts so I could be gelling like Magellan :) makes em super comfy for riding :)
-
I just bought a pair of these snow shoes, and they work great!
-
That's different
-
@thegreck I'm not sure if you think our shoe choice is ridiculous... But, let them do this to your back, and I promise you will want every advantage
-
@Aaron-Broward-FL I wouldn't say ridiculous, just not really necessary (and I honestly thought you were kidding when you posted the photo... those shoes look like something from Back to the Future!). I don't want newcomers or people who are considering buying a Onewheel looking at this thread and thinking they need some kind of extravagant or overly expensive shoes to be able to ride one without breaking their back.
All you need is flat-soled shoes and to make sure to keep your front foot on at least one sensor while riding, and to be careful about weight distribution across both footpads.
I've been riding several miles a day every day for the past 6 months and haven't had any sensor issues or unexpected crashes, and I just wear basic Chucks. And my rides feel very smooth and comfortable to me.
I'm not saying crashing isn't a possibility, but I think at this point, with all the successful miles I've put on my board, there's no way I could blame my shoes if it were to happen.
-
i have posted several times about the cut off issue and it's not me that's the problem... Maybe you should talk to the people who have an ongoing software conversation in the crashing thread... I will delete the photo. But no I wasn't kidding... And I posted that it may not be worth it for most people to go out and buy springblades. But, it does make the ride a lot better. You want an honest conversation about better board shoes for better riding? Because these make for better riding....
-
I think we can all agree, regardless of any shoe you wear after a mile or so your feet start to ache. Especially the front foot. The Gel inserts are a great idea too. The other reason I like the springs is they don't shift when your riding for awhile. Riding the other day with my skate shoes I noticed my foot was shifting forward slightly as I neared the 3rd mile. Great shoes and well suited for other electric vehicles. Like those orange wheel electric skateboards.
-
@Aaron-Broward-FL @wheeler Sorry guys, you're totally right. We're talking about a more comfortable ride, so whatever works for each person to get that, I'm all for it. I know the feet burning sensation very well, as we usually ride for several hours at our weekly LA meetups, so I might actually try the gel inserts thing myself.
-
@thegreck I was really hoping that the aching feet were just part of the learning process and would go away as I get more experience... crap.
-
@westcoastr The aching will go away for the most part, but that burning numbness from having your feet vibrating for several miles doesn't seem to go away.
-
@thegreck I guess that's partly good news... Thanks!
-
@westcoastr & @thegreck I really feel the foot tingle after the 3-4 mile range in my current cheap shoes... I look forward to the Nike SBs arriving this week. My goal is to stay connected but with a bit more cushion. Updates to follow.
-
@LidPhones Keep us posted!
-
The burning thing in the feet is muscle spams... I suffer from that because of a medical condition all over my body, there are some things you can do to help.
- It will get better with time as you will build those muscles.
- Try to relax your feet as you ride as opposed to keeping them tense.
- Use the gel insets, that actually helped me a lot.
- Eat a banana before riding.
- Magnesium citrate supplements are also very effective and have good half life just prior to ride.
You can also stretch those muscles prior to riding and stop and stretch your muscles when they start to burn... ;)
-
honestly i ride in this
http://www.511tactical.com/pursuit-advance-6-boot.html?color=81221
Side note I didnt buy them with the intent of riding in them it just worked out that and life has been
-
I found that it was easier especially on ruff terrain to have more flexibility. I tried my lebron Hightops. My ankles were not strong when I first started.... But, I now prefer the freedom....
-
@Dark_Knight my position is one of finding what works best for your personal riding style. Those are some tough boots and look like they should stick nicely to the board. Also I bet small rocks have a hard time getting in. ;-)
-
@LidPhones Yea i havent had any problems with rocks and or water however as a person who tends to adjust their feet alot these boots can be kinda hard in that aspect.
-
@westcoastr NIKE SB's should arrive today. I hope to have a video review posted once I get a 4 mile ride in to see how they feel.
-
Nike SBs did not arrive yet.... Hopefully today. I really am not a fan of the UPS sure post service. Once it passes to the USPS you have no idea of the ETA...
-
you ordered them from the nike site? @LidPhones
-
@Dark_Knight No. I ordered from the link to Sports Authority shared by @sonny123 above in this post.
-
Got them. They look great and seem to have a good grippy bottom. Review of fit and function will be posted after a few rides.
-
vans for me are the best!
-
@LidPhones I love how Nike's SB line are the only one's in turquoise colored boxes vs. orange. It makes them so much easier to sniff out in shoe stores.
-
@fiberbiker I might try some vans down the road too. Starting with the Nike SB. They will for sure be better than my Old Navy kicks (no cushion at all).
-
@bmtka so true. I am hitting the Nike outlet this weekend and will keep an eye open for deals.
-
@LidPhones I was just at the one at Potomac Mills when I was visiting the area. They had nothing in my size (6.5M). They had plenty of black/red/white Dunk SBs in larger sizes though. You should definitely snag a pair of those if you can. I'm such a girl when it comes to shoes and bags, I have FOUR pair of Dunk SBs already. Watch Tactics.com for deals too.
-
@bmtka thanks for the link. I had not been to that site before. I like it.
-
Wow these Nike SB Zooms really stick and have some good cushion. Only a quick 3 mile ride with good carving session. I like them so far.
-
4th of July Ride... Love'n the Nike's
I got to experience a nosedive going up hill too fast at my weight. I was able to run it out and not go down. It was close but pulled it off.
-
CCount 8 July 2016, 03:20 UTC
Flip flops work just fine for me...
-
@Count I have also seen a video I believe with a rider using bare feet. That method would connect well with the OW but I fear that a toe or two could be lost at some point. It would depend on how aggressively the OW is ridden.
-
I recently tried some boat shoes sockless and it's as close to riding barefoot as can get.
-
CCount 9 July 2016, 00:29 UTC
I have ridden bare foot many times, but I have taken a spill or 2, which I was not able to correlate to anything I did, and assumed it may have been a poor contact to the touch pad issue. On road, I am definitely wearing shoes, but on the beach, flips work fine for me!
-
@Count I just rode with some Clark closed toe sandals and must say the feel was nice and locked in. Also a bit freeing too.
-
I completed a 6 mile ride to the gym and back on Sunday around noon. Then another 3 miles helping the neighborhood kids (mine included) with Pokemon Go Sunday evening. The Nike SB Zooms remain as my favorite board shoes for the long rides on pavement and grass.
-
Proof of my shoes ....
-
@Aaron-Broward-FL I like the look of the red blades and the blue OW.
-
@Aaron-Broward-FL here is a shot of my grey blades on the OW.
-
Well, just got these from Sport Authority.
Not bad so far.. -
@sonny123 Very nice. I like the blue with natural sole.
-
@sonny123 Thanks again for sharing this link.

Looks like I should buy another pair as the prices have dropped another $20 or so depending on the model.

@LidPhones
The insoles are pretty thick and comfortable.

Good find.
I ended up getting another.
The gold ones. -

@sonny123 try some dr sholes gel inserts.... They hug your feet allow for awesome control and are super comfy

@sonny123 @sonny123 try some dr sholes gel inserts.... They hug your feet allow for awesome control and are super comfy
-
I would note that my favrorite way to ride is barefoot, because it provides the most control over the board, and the 2nd favorite is gel inserts with blade shoes, it's the closest to barefoot and also the most comfortable. The shoe has give and take with the board.... It's not ridged like a hard bottom shoe. It's more like your foot. At the same time the hard vibrations are dissipated in the blades themselves... It really is a match made in heaven :)
-
Aahxe45 14 July 2016, 14:05 UTC
Even though I won't be wearing them for riding very often, I had my chaps dress shoes on that I wear to work and wanted to go for a quick ride. Holy crap!!! I had a hard time getting my feet off of the grip tape they stuck so well. Obviously I would look ridiculous riding around in dress shoes all the time but it was definitely an experience.
-
Wanted to post a photo of a dress shoe ride. I must agree that they really stick to the board. Almost to sticky. Also note the addition of the sweet grab handle from @thegreck and @Jimmers75 (great work guys, much easier to carry the OW now).
-
Aaris 19 July 2016, 08:49 UTC
The best shoe, and I've tried them all, is something you'd never guess: driving moccasins. The thin sole, with rubber grip still there, plus the extreme flexibility makes for all the advantages of a shoe with all the feel of barefoot. TRUST.
-
@aris You've tried them all?? Do you work at Foot Locker or something?
-
I have been thinking of trying my 5 finger vibram shoes....... My only concern would be possible toe injury if I happen to launch off the board. I will likey give it try.
-
Looks like the Sports Athority Webstore is closed for sales. Time to see what shoes are left at a store.....

All this fuss about shoes. As I previously posted, flip flops are the best. Perfectly flat on the bottom. I'm an old man, and would not be caught dead in some of the shoes I have seen here.
-
Wwr420 2 August 2016, 15:49 UTC
@Count "All this fuss about shoes" - lol right? My best shoes are my flip flops and a pair of 10 year old vans...
-
It has been great seeing the input from everyone's varied perspectives. That is what is great about the OW community. We share a common passion but remain uniquely ourselves.
-
@sonny123 I finally got around to posting an image of the insole for my Nike SBs. I must admit the shoe is nice for grip and fit but the insole makes the ride comfortable.
-
@619onewheel there are various footwear options discussed above in this thread. Be safe and have fun OW'n

RRoy @LidPhones 23 September 2016, 13:55 UTC
@LidPhones Does anyone else ride bare? (Barefoot that is ;-) ) and when is a good option for you?
Barefoot only when I ride on the sand
-
@Roy Very nice. Looks like a blast. I need to get my OW to the beach.
-
RRoy 23 September 2016, 16:01 UTC
It's fun, I never smile like that.
-
Aahxe45 23 September 2016, 17:19 UTC
@LidPhones I ride barefoot all the time. Usually I try not to do it on pavement but I do every once in a while. Have yet to hurt my feet while riding barefoot. The only time I had a really bad fall where I messed up my ankle was riding in flip flops. I didn't realize my flip flop was staying in place over the sensors but my foot was sliding all over the place and I did a nosedive mid turn and slid out on my side
-
@LidPhones I only ride barefoot on short distances... never at super fast speeds. I do do the golf course thing at night. But there is lots of bailing area. It's dangerous. I only had an incident once. Never really scratched myself up at all. But I have also gotten really good. It takes a lot for me to wipe out. Basically have to over push and I keep safe from that. Especially with no shoes.
With no shoes to, you have like uber control like micro control over changes....
-
@ahxe45 I rode with flipflops once at the beach... Never again!
-
Ddalisdair 24 September 2016, 03:34 UTC
I told the sales dude I wanted shoes that would be tough, because I figured I'd fall off a lot. When he went to get me some shoes some drunk, sun-burned, dirty, red-faced, cool skateboard dudes told me the Nike SB's would last way longer than any other shoes there. They seemed pretty credible. The SB's are working well for me.
-
@dalisdair Agreed, my NIKE SB are working very well for the rough and paved trails. It is great to hear what works for other OW riders....
-
@LidPhones On sand or grass, I'll ride barefoot as often as not. On pavement I definitely prefer to have shoes, but I'd rather ride barefoot than ride in the wrong shoes - if all I have are flip flops, or high heels/wedges, barefoot it is
-
@LidPhones it gives you nice control of the board, similar to the thin, flat soles of Converse/Vans. Or, I imagine, Tevas.
-
@1woman1wheel I totally agree on the no shoe is better than a dangerous shoe on the OW. Though I have never considered wearing high heels on the OW or elsewhere for that matter. I have taken a Hot Barre class or two so I may be able to pull off some high heels. LOL
-
@LidPhones said in Better Board Shoes Make for Better Riding!:

After the talk about barefoot riding on the OW. I have found my new favorite... It combines the toe freedom of barefoot with some very good heal and sole cushion. The 5 finger Vibram shoe is amazing. I have done about 10 miles so far. I was able to achieve my new top speed of 16.1 MPH in them as well ;-)
-
RRoy 4 October 2016, 13:48 UTC
5 fingers are great as long as they are a fit your foot type. I've had them for years and for me they work really well.
-
i ride mostly barefoot. i figure shoes are for walking.
i ride everyday and have never had foot strain. i get the feeling that some of you are gluing your foot to the sensor.
i roll my feet as i carve, change foot position constantly, and have switched feet without the board crapping out.
the hundreds of crapouts i've had with bad sensors all occurred with my foot square across both sensors.
if your board is working correctly, you can do a little box-step or cha-cha while riding without issue.
--maybe some dancing shoes.
-
@mrb great info. I have tried being more relaxed about the front foot position on the sensors. I agree that it is nice to have a bit of freedom to move around and just cover one sensor when at speed.
-

@LidPhones Best advice I can give is to try them on. Don't have anything bad to say about the Brewers (or Donners, or Rasslers), just that the Loyak had the best feel for me when trying them on. The key is in the grippy sole, which all Astrals boast.

I love my vivobarefoot shoes for riding. Minimal rubber between me and the deck for optimal control, but I am a barefooter everywhere also....
-
@Hazeey Same here! Vivobarefoot for everyday walking around and have been working great on my rides.
-
Any recent shoe finds with all the new OW+ riders out and about? I am still loving the Nike SB.....
-

This has been excellent.

Thanks. Those look great and should offer a great ride. I did a 5.7 mile ride after some time away and really appreciate a quality shoe.... Price seems okay too:

@LidPhones
Yep, I like the flat sole, covers plenty of sensor,
as I ride with my front foot plenty forward. -
@LidPhones @sonny123 I still love my Adidas Super Dailys on the board.
-
How you guys are riding more then a couple blocks in those flat ass shoes without your feet killing you is beyond me? I have bought a few pairs of flat "skate" shoes specifically for riding and they are all collecting dust now.. ruined the whole experience for me from the discomfort.
Then I tried an old pair of Nike Air Max I had laying around and damn talk about the most comfortable ride + full control & good grip..I can do 3-4 full charges back to back without any discomfort.. the full on air unit makes for a super cushioned ride especially in bumpy conditions + cuts down vibration.. these are my current favorite boarding shoes.
-
@GlueBreath I rode my board 24 miles 2 days ago in my Adidas. I'm 45 years old, 211 lbs. Live with the pain. Ride or die.
A musical selection to make your feet tingle and your eardrums vibrate like a butterflies wings...
-
@GlueBreath If you're having pain issues, walking, standing or riding in any shoe you may have plantar fasciitis or the start of it. These inserts have really helped me with foot pain and you can add to any shoe. They were recommended by my doctor. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Dhpc&field-keywords=pure+stride+

I'm also experimenting with Adidas Pureboost + Ultraboost but they still need to be broken in for proper long term comfort so I'm not 100% sold on them yet.. these are all $180+ a pair shoes retail so I wouldn't recommend them exclusively for riding but if you have an old pair laying around of either try it out.. might surprise you for a "runner".. I'm all about long term comfort since I use my OW as a means of getting around not just a recreational "toy".
Springblades my friend... with gel inserts... most comfortable ride you can get. Also if you have muscle fatigue I'm your foot, take magnesium pills before you ride. It will help with the muscle spasms
-
Have been playing a fair amount of Disc Golf lately so not a ton of speed more side hill on grass and dirt. I am liking the freedom and grip from this closed toe sandal..!
-
@lidphones just ordered my OW+ with disc golf use in mind. How are you faring on the course? Any tips+tricks you'd like to share? Any negative feedback from other disc golfers on the course? Thanks.
-
@bsulla I am loving it so far. If the course is irrigated then the loss of friction on grass could be an issue depending on the OW skill level. I am a heavier guy @ 230+ so some steeper uphill runs require carrying the OW. Down hill is a blast. I think of it like my golf cart (LOL). Let me know how the OW+ works for you.

Probably seems batshit crazy to most of you, but the BEST shoe I have ridden in are Clark's business shoes.
-
@lidphones that's awesome. I am about the same weight. For now I shall continue to play the waiting game. Thanks. Cheers.
-
@OW-Miami
Not 🦇 💩 crazy at all... I have done a few miles in my Ecco shoes and they stick really well.
-
@ow-miami @LidPhones would love to see a pic of you guys in your business attire riding the OW- now that's taking care of business!
-
@groovyruvy Casual Biz for Friday. Will need one with suit next... LOL
-
@ow-miami @LidPhones I bet these are shoes feel the best due to their elevated heel and probably because of their cushy insoles. I tried using skateboard shoes when i first started riding the OW but I found the larger the heel the more connected to the board I felt. Obviously this is speaking specifically to heels on mens shoes not large women's shoes.
I have not had any luck uploading pictures or videos to this forum, but if you follow the links in my signature you can see some videos of me riding in a suit and even one with me in a suit with my dog.

Nike SB's as my daily drivers but damn the board feels like it's connected to you when you ride barefoot. I usually ride barefoot to the beach or close by and just cruising/carving, no crazy stuff.

Planning ahead to a 2018 OW+ purchase (totally miss the old V1).....
As we exit 2017 and start 2018 it is an ideal time to visit about what is your footware of choice... Here is one 2018 list to start things off

I don't think I'd use those SoIll shoes. The soles are softer climbing rubber, which is great for stickiness, but wears very fast. I think on grip tape and pavement you'd wear them down super fast.
Just my experience from wearing 5.10 approach shoes.

@granite
Appricate the perspective and real world feedback. It looked like a great option but I wondered if it would be to sticky / soft to hold up.

i just use A pair of Converse Chuck Taylor All Star High tops. They are great and protect my ankle from the Hard rail in crashes.

@ansen-french
Sweet... I have always loved All Star High tops. When it works, it just works! -
A great find on clearance at Nike Outlet for $25. Cool blue color and easy-on fit with great bite on the XR deck.
-
@LidPhones I love that keen shoes for work. Mostly because I need a safety toe and they come in a wide width. I wonder how other styles would do on the board though.
-
@tomfoolery pretty much any shoe or boot with a softer sole works well on the stock OW deck. Then it comes down to comfort and support for the longer rides. My MOTO has always been to wear it for function and if it also looks great it is a plus...

Any new shoes of mention for 2019? I am still liking Nike’s Stefan Janoski Canvas Skate shoe line. They have great style and comfort for long XR rides.....
-
These Straye SB shoes are nice and they always have a half off sale, So you can get a pair for under 25$ https://straye.com/collections/lows/products/fairfax-black-black

Vans skate pro works great for me! Super cush
-
@Khayman
I need to give some Vans a try. I am always looking for a cush ridding shoe. -
@Whiplash
The Straye SB shoes look cool. How do they ride? -
@LidPhones They ride great

@LidPhones Vans in the Ultra Cush series are great for long rides. Flat like a skate shoe, super grippy with shock absorption like running shoes. I did ver 19 miles on the street the other day and my feet didn't even get sore.
-
@HighFive
I will check those out. A 19 mile ride is a great test for any OW shoe. Appreciate the tip. -
I feel this is still relevant for 2020 maybe more so now with the Pint having a smaller tread area.... I still love my Janoski but will likely be checking out some Ultra Cush per @HighFive .
