Fender reviews?
-
I got my board back today and had a nice ride. I just realized I have a fender sitting here that I never thought about until now. Obviously I would have thought about it if the road were wet or if I was riding over gravel but the roads by my house are pretty clean and dry today.
So how do you like your fender and how do you use it? Leave it on all the time or put it on as needed? Does it keep all debri away? Does it affect the noise level?
-
Love it, for very specific reasons
- lots of thunder storms where I live, mean lots of puddles
- less obviously, they mean a fair amount of sand and debris
Fender fixes both of these issues. Completely. So a 3 mile ride to work is doable and so are runs to meetings and all I need to do is arrive without a soggy or dirty inner pant leg.
I haven't felt the need to remove and I missed my BTTF opportunity for hot pink wrapping, but may still feel a strong need to do this.
-
@shaunabe I have a 3 mile commute as well but don't have my board yet- how long has the ride been taking you?
-
Better part of 20min. Biggest variable is number of people who will stop you to ask about your OW :)
-
@huber_760 I generally use Google Maps and switch it to Bike mode to estimate travel times on the OW. It's fairly accurate as I think they use 10-12 mph as the bike speed.
-
Love the fender! It is nice never to have to be concerned with dirt going up on your board and in your shoe ext... I think the board is way better with it. The only thing I don't like is the fact that it scratches easily. My friend let someone ride his board and the flipped it over on the concrete. Now it doesn't look so good. I'm a little more picky about who rides my board for that reason. Still wouldn't be without it. I'm looking forward to the hot pink carbon fiber version :) @huber_760 @Franky

Unlike a lot of other people here, I have never ridden my OW without my fender. It just worked out that my fender arrived a couple days before my used OW so I just attached it as soon as I had the board in hand since I knew I'd be taking the board off road. I have put some scratches on it, but despite that it has held up well and I've never had to endure mud, water, or small pebbles hitting my leg during a ride.

No reason to take it off after you install it. Huge difference. I used to have a pile of small rocks on both sides of the foot pads after a ride. It really looks better too. I would prefer an aluminum fender personally for durability.

I like my fender a lot. Probably gonna stick a blutetooth speaker to it!
-
If you off-road or going to crash a lot you need to remove it, already broken 1..

Best purchase of the year for me. The fender means more time on the OW for me, which would have been impossible to ride in winter as it rains almost everyday! I'll be getting another as a spare next time I order something from FM!
-
@Code-ster You should definitely ride around a bit without the fender at least just to check it out. Its pretty cool to ride with the tire exposed.
-
I put it it on tonight but didn't get a chance to ride it. The install wasn't super quick but I'll get faster at it with some practice. I agree that the board looks better with the wheel exposed but that's probably a small price to pay most of the time. Also I do like to mix it up and push the limits off road and normally I can expect the board to tumble and roll several times. Sounds like I should remove the fender for this. Since I ride off road pretty regularly I guess I'll spend most of the time with the fender off and put it on mainly when the roads are messy.

Great fender use!!
-
Rained all night and just had my first ride with fender....one word: awesome! There is no way I would have ridden this morning without the fender but instead I cruised on wet pavement and soggy grass without a care. Hopefully they can work on the durability since I like to ride more aggressively and don't want to buy a supply of fenders.

@SC720 I think today's the day:wink:

I don't have my OW yet, but if you like the exposed look, do you really need a fender that goes all the way around the wheel? I am thinking of some sort of flexible rubber brush on both sides of the wheel to keep things water and debris from splashing up but not need to go all around?
See my beautiful MS paint diagram
Would this work?

it would work one direction - but the front one would be eaten up by the wheel - it would be like when trousers get stuck between the wheel and wood

CCode-ster @SC720 24 October 2015, 21:56 UTC
@SC720 My verdict: Equally as fun without the fender and I noticed way more heads turning. It's like, with the entire wheel exposed, people just seem to "get it."
-
@Code-ster That was pretty much my thought too. I'll be keeping the fender on for now but I do love it without also. I noticed more gawkers with the wheel exposed as well.
-
@rainynite That's a very good idea! Maybe even use plastic brush bristles like from a small whisk broom. the bristles could actually rub on the wheel, and protect your from spray and debris. Hmmmm..... you have me thinking now.

Rrainynite @J-Glide 25 October 2015, 06:38 UTC
@J-Glide i was thinking more of some sort of rubber material... wonder if I could just cut the length down to size (width = 9" so seems right) and screw them on:
-
@rainynite I went to the hardware store last night, and experimented with some different material. I will have to update as I find out what works best. I did install something last night but I couldn't find any water to drive through to see if it helped

Could someone please take a photo of the fm fender I want to see what it looks like where it meets the footplates from the wheel side - looking under neath it and then just a side photo of the bottom of the fender
I made my own - rolled a sheet of aluminium and bent it out for feet - but I'm worried about water maybe going under the footplate and want to see if the fm fender extends down past the wood so to speakThanks in advance :)
-
@eish I tried a couple of different things, and yes you can reduce the amount of water that splashes up on you by adding sponge, and/or a lower exterior door seal to rub on the tire. It doesn't look very good, and everything I tried made a rubbing noise while riding. My new fender from OW came in, and I have to say that I didn't think I would be as impressed as I am by the design. It makes the board seam complete, and provides complete protection. I didn't think I would have ever said it's worth the $100 after shipping, but I have changed my mind. I actually ended up ordering another for my other board. I apologize for not being able to come up with a lesser expensive alternative.
-
@J-Glide i was thinking of trying your rubber idea on the back side the wheel but under the wheel - I made a metal one but am struggling to attach it to the board - planned to use the screws though the foot plate - but they aint long enough and their thread is really weird non of the ones I have in the garage fit the cappers say they are 5mm but 5mm bolts don't fit - the thread is funky :( I currently duct tape it on with a loop around the feet and the board
so I am tempted to buy the us one but its $135 to the uk and then theres import duties, vat and the ups handling fee - it will end up at over £120 for a pice of plastic which seems a tad steep -
@eish The stupid duties and taxes make it a lot more expensive. It looks like you're making a valiant effort though. I think maybe you should just bite the bullet since its only a one time deal. I know you won't be disappointed.

@J-Glide thanks for trying ..I'll still give it a try once (if) I get my board just for kicks. I don't expect a solution to remove 100% of the water... just enough. I'll give an update when I've given it a try.

How long from order to receive the fender/ I ordered from onewheel on 12/02, 10days later no tracking notice yet. Sent email and they replied as if it were an order for onewheel itself that it'll be 8 weeks. I replied, this order is for a fender, i already have my board, please check again. No response yet. I thought the fender would just ship right out.

How long did it take from order date to arrive? I ordered one from FM on 12/02 and inquired on status yesterday after no ship notice in 10 days. They replied as if it was an order for board. I replied I already have board, this in for a fender. No response yet. I thought it would just ship right out.

My magnetic fender works great

Can't wait to get it!
-
NNat @Tymeout 14 December 2015, 21:27 UTC
@Tymeout I ordered quite earlier on so did't take long at all, I've heard that after the first batch ran out it'll take some time for FM to produce the next batch and catch up with all the orders (which exceeded their expectation from what I gathered). Not sure about the situation now though, but hope your arrives soon!

Wwheelking 14 December 2015, 22:57 UTC
There's no need to wait for an OEM fender. I have a brand new OneWheel fender still in the original box with all the hardware available to ship right now. My cost was $106 and I'll sell mine for $95 with free shipping included. Thanks!
-
@Tymeout They are about three weeks out. You will get a tracking number email just before it arrives.

I love the fender for the practicality of less water & debris on my leg, plus it's easier to carry and lean the fender against my leg.
But, I definitely prefer the no fender look. I miss seeing the tire. A clear fender would be cool.
Also, it seems to scratch very easily. I wouldn't let a newbie ride it with the fender on.
An easily detachable fender would be great. See other thread..
My ideal fender would be retractable instead of detachable. :)
