Onewheel Demographics

I wonder what the average age of onewheel users is? I imagine it is pretty high given the high cost of entry, unlike skateboarding. Probably similar to skiing/snowboarding as those sports are also relatively expensive given the lift tickets. Skateboarding and surfing tend to be younger I would imagine.
I'm also guessing at least 90% male?
I think for onewheel to really take off, need to decrease the barrier to entry, decrease the average age of user, and even out the male/female ratio.... last thing they need is for onewheel to be ridden only by bunch of rich, old guys!
-
I purchased mine when I was 17! With a little hard work and entrepreneurship, I think if anyone really wants something it's achievable.
-
These are really early days and us owners are early adopters. I agree that price is the biggest barrier right now. While most adults that see me riding think it's really cool, most of them think it would be too hard for them or impractical though they could probably swing the price. It's the young people and kids that see me and immediately want to ride and want one....and those are the people that cannot afford it yet.
-
Getting mine Friday , I'm 35.. I would of killed for one when I was kid..
-
Ttomtnt @Franky 26 October 2015, 03:42 UTC
I'm almost too embarassed to admit to people how much it cost!
-
Rrainynite 26 October 2015, 04:07 UTC
37..would have loved to own one when I was in college and had all sorts of time on my hands...
-
18 and when I get my board in a few weeks I will be riding it around the most beautiful college campus in the US - Rollins College
-
CCris 26 October 2015, 04:54 UTC
I'm 19, might be 20 when mine arrives and My 15 year old sister really likes the onewheel also, so when she learns how to use it I'll let her use it to get to her highschool and stuff :)
-
Average age seems to be from 35-45. We have several people in LA that fall into that age group.
-
38 here.
@huber_760 - I can vouch that Rollins is absolutely beautiful. We love visiting Winter Park and catching a play at the Annie Russell. Enjoy!
-
30 here. Felt like I was 15 again when riding for the first time :)
-
46 here. (man the last 20 years are a blur. all you youngin's out there enjoy life every day!)
-
Bbgwily1 26 October 2015, 12:05 UTC
33 here. Perfect way to pass time after the wakeboard season.
-
36 here.Ride everyday everywhere in all weather :)
-
HHoudini 26 October 2015, 12:31 UTC
40 here. I agree with callenj357, 30s flew by like a blink.
-
39 here. And let me join the choir in saying "enjoy your youth!" Now get off my lawn!
-
16 here. GETTING MINE TODAY!
-
42 here, but my family can attest that my Onewheel age is quite a bit lower. Failed to convince my wife that multiple OW's was a viable alternative to a minivan, else I'd be helping skew the demo a bit younger.
-
KkillerClownShoes 26 October 2015, 14:25 UTC
24! Still waiting for tracking
-
35....and I ride a hoverboard every day to work via a beach boardwalk. Never would have believed that as a kid growing up in Ohio.

54 here , skiing in the "3 Vallées" in french alpes
-
35 and my 65 year old father loves riding as well!
-
@forzabucks also 35 but when my 67 dad stepped up and said he should try, I told him he would probably hurt himself. Does your dad snowboard or any other board sport? My dad doesn't ride anything other than a bike.
-
@Franky He ski's, but he is a very good natural athlete. He tried snowboarding years ago and hurt himself, and I think the OW gives him back that feeling without the pain. I can't ride mine around him without him taking it...It's pretty funny actually.
-
Definitely if you like bikes or scooters, you can find a lot of people who love a OneWheel and Hoverboards.

49 here going on 50. Saw a video and thought that's the coolest thing ever! Had to have one. Rode for the first time today and had a blast. Went to extreme mode after 10 minutes, much better. Little wobbly at times but no crashes yet, not looking forward to that since I don't bounce like I used to. Oh and turning will have a learning curve for me. I was never a boarder so this is all new to me. Hoping to ride to work before too long.
-
- I've had mine about 1 month now.

@thegreck that's great to here! Just checked UPS and it's been delivered to my friend's house today. Got 2 weeks to wait before I arrive back in the USA and get to learn to ride the OW !

I just turned 16 when I got mine, it took me almost a year to save up and work to be able to afford a second hand board.

45 years young here in Sweden.
I bought it just for fun and fun it is!
It's the most fun I had in 15 years. -
34 year old GUY up here in Vermont. Having great fun with it, wish they were around when I was younger. Put a smile on my face the first time I rode one and knew I had to have one. They are pricey and I always tell people to just check the website, I will only say what it is, not how much it costs.

58 year old male - never was in to any board sports - XR delivered 6/12/18 - ride at least every other day - initially steep learning curve - getting more & more confident on it every day

Hi there!
2nd OneWheel (v1 and +)
3rd season
40 years -
@candicehorie Obrigado!
-
60 years old, grew up on skateboards, snowboarding for over 20 years, hopped right on the OneWheel+ last year and now have over 1300 miles on it. Just got an XR and love it, although the battery EASILY outlasts me!
-
I will be 61 next month. I have had my OW XR for 2 months and have 250 miles on it (it was still kiteboarding season or I would have more miles). Riding road, grass, trails, gravel. Can do 180's, ride switch, drop curbs. No significant crashes for the first 160 miles then my first nose dive with minor hip injury. Likely rider error in accelerating hard up an 8% grade. 2nd crash was rider error as I was goofing around in gravel. Minor hip (same side) and shoulder injuries. I don't bounce like I used to nor do I heal very quickly. In addition to a helmet and wrist guards I have now added hip padding (Triple8 Butt Saver), combined shoulder/elbow pads from my dirt bike gear, knee pads, and gloves under the wrist guards when I am doing anything at speed. I plan on donning my motorcycle race leathers and gear to do a speed run ignoring push back. Should be amusing!

I'm 61 and have the first edition. By far the coolest toy I've ever owed.
There are waves to ride everywhere if you just open your eyes.... -
@Devon you welcome :)
-
@Dr-9Lives can’t wait to see how that goes. Be careful and get it on video. If you have fangs or the glider system by synergyWiz I’m sure a few of us would like to know how that goes.
-
59 going on 60. Not rich and don't consider myself old (although there are those that would debate that). No skateboarding or snowboarding but I do occasionally race motocross.
I've been riding my XR and Plus on trails here in Marin for the last couple of years. I have yet to see another Onewheel locally, we OWers seem to be few and far between geographically. I've recruited friends and family to ride with me but, unfortunately, several have injured themselves so the OW has been banished from family gatherings. Although my friends race motocross they just shake their heads when I attempt to recruit them.
There are no group rides in Marin, they gather in SF, SJ or the eastbay. Now, if I could only ride my OW that far................ -
Wwheelrich 4 November 2018, 21:29 UTC
I don't see anyone on here to beat me yet...agewise, that is. I am 73 now. Started in July when I was still a young 72. In fact I did a short video of me riding on my birthday last month. Since then I have gone over 100 miles and I would say I am definitely much better. Pretty confident on smooth surfaces, and slowly learning a little off road. Never a skateboarder or snowboarder. This did not come easy to me. If you are struggling, check out my newbie thread on this forum. I am proof that almost anyone can learn this.
https://archive.owforum.co.uk/topic/7856/extreme-balance-challenged-newbie-impressions/98
-
@wheelrich As someone who is looking for a OneWheel, it was a great read to follow the thread that you wrote! I am 22 and have never skateboarded/snowboarded, but I definitely will follow some of your techniques because they seemed like a great exercise! Also, like everyone else, I really don't want to nosedive within the first couple of months.
-
36 and I just got the XR. I used to skateboard with my friends when I was younger but never got into the tricks, just cruised with them. I’ve been snowboarding a few times and picked that up rather quickly. A few years ago I decided to buy a longboard (not electric) because I just liked to cruise. Can’t wait to start floating now.
-
Wwheelrich @zapp 5 November 2018, 00:37 UTC
@zapp Thanks. I appreciate that. Most of the tips I picked up from watching many videos, reading lots of posts, and, of course, trial and lots of error. Just got back from 10.2 miles of riding, so I will add a few comments. I think you will enjoy the Onewheel, eventually, if not right away. And even if it proves difficult, enjoy the learning experience. Just know, that it you keep at it, you will do it.... and have fun!
Be sure to share your experiences.

AAceCannon 5 November 2018, 22:46 UTC
Just turned 48yo. Love the OW, and my 10yo son loved it so much I bought him one last Christmas. Lemmie, tell you, it is a blast to go for father-son rides.
I've only had one accident, and it was very early on, going less than 2mph. No broken bones, but I couldn't even write with a pen the next day. And that was WITH wrist guards. Hip / butt / flank was very bruised. Several hundred miles since then without accident.
I rec full pads and helmet. The crashes happen with little warning, and pavement isn't nearly as forgiving as snow!!
-
Sspeedracer 6 November 2018, 16:35 UTC
I'm 74 and have ridden 500 + miles since June. I went on my ass a few times the first couple days (that hurts) but not since. Never skateboarded or snowboarded but have skied since I was 10. Also, did high wind (Columbia River Gorge) windsurfing for 15 years. There's 6 - 8 O/W's in my neighborhood and no one does safety gear so I don't either. Average age is around 40 - 50.
-
Wwheelrich @speedracer 6 November 2018, 16:50 UTC
@speedracer You win! You have an extra year on me (73 here) and almost 400 miles (me 117). I also skied some, in my 30s, but was very mediocre at it. Same falling experience...on my butt. Good to hear from another 70+!
-
Sspeedracer 6 November 2018, 17:11 UTC
Wow, what are the odds of the two oldest guys being on this website at the same time? I was at the Reno Air Races in September (flew down from Hood River, Or. with my O/W in my Long EZ) and stayed at the Sands Casino/hotel. I got busted 3 days in a row by security for riding my O/W inside the casino. "Hey, I'm a guest here. I'm also handicapped and this is how I get around". They didn't buy it. Since then I've added a 5" x 5" handicap sticker on the fender (really). I have a trashed knee from ski wrecks and am waiting on a new knee from the V/A so it's pretty legit.
-
Wwheelrich @speedracer 6 November 2018, 18:30 UTC
@speedracer Of course. I remember talking to you before now. Glad you are still at it and going strong. Handicap sticker is an interesting way to go. It would probably be effective here in So Cal. Currently I am doing most of my wheeling at a Cal State U near me. So far no one has given me any grief at all. The campus police just seem curious about the OW, but never stop me. Even faculty gives me thumbs up reception most of the time. Students? Most have their heads buried in their phones, so if I ride on a weekday I have learned how to creep behind them until I can get by.
Just starting to do a little dirt riding, usually on a track. Eventually hope to do some light off road/trail stuff. But, not in a hurry. I enjoy the learning. New things to challenge us, keeps us younger!
-
BBobbyBee 30 June 2019, 00:15 UTC
I am a 57yo male and I have never ridden on any board. I have had my XR for four days, and I ride with a helmet, elbow, wrist and knee protection. So far I love it, certainly taking it easy... very easy. I live on a quiet street so I am getting lots of practice and yes the neighbors think I am dumb. They end up laughing, closing the door and heading back to the couch. My wife is horrified but tolerates my endeavor.

59 year old male, I'll be 60 this year. Been riding for 3 years now. Mostly ride with a bunch of much younger guys from the Reno-Tahoe Onewheel FB group. We typically do 15-40 mile rides on bike paths, single track trails, or anywhere that looks interesting. Top speed is over 22mph, typically ride in the 15-19mph range, and always ride with helmet and wrist guards minimum.
-
Will be 59 in November, grew up surfing, skateboarding, and water skiing in Florida, took up snow skiing for a few years out in Colorado, 10 years ago. Looking forward to getting the Pint, current July 16 but a moving target, and have already got all the PPE and Hero 3 ready.
-
@k8marlo wait, you're in the Reno/Tahoe area? i'm in Reno! i was going to post on the local reddit once i had my Pint to see if there were other riders in the area. this is good news.
-
K
@Franko Link up with other local riders on the Reno-Tahoe Onewheel FB group.
-
@k8marlo ahhh - i'm not a facebook guy. hopefully there's other ways.

S
I’m 48 and there are around 5 other OWs in my town. I’m the oldest of everyone in town to get one as far as I know. I wanted one two years ago when I first stumbled upon it on the internet. Coming to terms with the cost took 2 years but I found a good deal on a leftover, brand new plus last April when the Pint was announced. For my riding the bigger wheel on the plus is better.
-
@tomtnt I'm 22, still waiting for my pint. I'm 5'11, 135 lbs
-
38 and Female here.
Snowboarder and former skater. Living in the NorCal Bay Area, I commute from Livermore to SF every weekday- that journey was the justification needed for my Pint purchase ;D But I also live on acreage and am stoked to trail ride as well! Not so interested in hi speeds or tricks, I mostly just want to float and carve!
-
J
I'm getting mine in a few weeks. I'm an 18-year-old guy. I saved up for several weeks to purchase the pint, and I think it will be worth the high cost. I'm planning on using it to float around my college campus and make travel between classes a lot of fun.
-
@JayWalker and @TyDie good to have you in the one wheel population. Rest of us are old farts! 👴👵
-
55 here in southern Nevada.
Have done pretty much all of the board sports Including powered stuff for 45+ years. I think the background transfers pretty well. Tried a + in a MotoZoo dealership and off I went around the showroom and building. Traded another toy for the next XR that they got in. Not sure if it is the "most fun", since each toy has its own charms, but for miles and shear ease of use, it is top of the list. -
M
This question is in a few places. Here, the Facebook groups, and on Instagram.
Is anyone ever going to compile it into a gee whiz graphic? I saw on C-Net (or somesuch media place) that the average person with a one wheel is a 39 year old dude.
-
price is a factor
-
O
Day 2 owner of a new XR. 51 years old, 5'11" 170lbs.
Zero board experience other than being able to ride the first skateboards in 1977 for a few months.. That was a long time ago.
But I Have hiked the AT and PCT and CDT in their entities in the early 90s'... My legs are machines and still strong. Noodles for upper body though... Lol.
I can't travel much more than about 5 to 10 mph right now and I make huge 10ft circle turns to turn around but I can see the future. Hmph. It won't be long and I should be a little more confident and nimble. -
M
56 here in Rhode Island - ex skateboarder, windsurfer and snowboarder but this is the best! Being able to hop on and go from my front door is incredible. 100 miles in and no major tumbles yet - but I back off at the first sign of pushback around 15mph. I think the best description was when someone said it feels like it is your decision to slow down - very subtle! Anyway, having said that my next post will be from the ER...
-
O
@McSkiD no it won't. You're smart and not pushing it. I say this because I'm the same way and praying I never have a serious fall at 51 years old. I'm still working, you know.. ... Although I'm still learning and traveling at less than 10 mph right now... Lol
-
M
@OJsakila I'm starting to push it inadvertently lol - I noticed I was getting pushback much sooner than I expected and thought I must have selected a different shaping by mistake. Nope, still in delirium - I'm just getting more comfortable with speed. I'm betting you are, too!
-
O
@McSkiD me too!! I'm now up to 9.9 mph.. Lol. Still in Cruz mode.. Haven't experienced pushback yet I don't think.. Definitely making progress every second I'm on it.
I'm in Love again!
-
M
@McSkiD I hope this reaches you but I also live in Rhode Island and would enjoy riding with someone! I live in Warwick but I’ve been riding all over the state
-
S
@wheelrich, It's been a year since I saw your post. That would make me 75 and you 74. Had my first (real) crash a month ago at the 995 mile mark. Riding up my driveway at 10 MPH and the motor just shut off and down I went. I know it shut off because the board rolled back down the driveway 100'. Cracked a couple ribs and sent the O/W back. Got it back 3 days ago and rode it every day since with no apparent loss of confidence. The warning sign I should have paid attention to was that sometimes it would take a few tries to get the motor started. Sometimes up to 10 tries, then it would be fine, until...…
