Android app not recording the whole ride

I have a Samsung galaxy Note 10, and I keep it in my pocket with the screen off when I am riding. But it does not seem to be running and collecting data in the background, because my ride will just consist of a few points, and be much shorter than the actual distance I traveled. I've gone into the phone and set it up so the app can run in the background, and it is never put to sleep. Any ideas?

So I think I figured this out... I had the power mode set to medium power savings on my android phone, and did not realize it. I set it to high performance mode, and it seemed to record the whole ride just fine, without any dropouts that I noticed. Next time I'm going to try it on optimized and see if it still tracks well.
