Art piece for the forum members
-
Got an itch to draw something and have been toying with the idea to do a project where I include a variety of riders in a single piece. Think of it as a "Thank You" to everyone here who's made the forum extremely welcoming and a joy to be a part of (even if we've never interacted) :)
I could just add people to the drawing but I figured it might be best to ask who might actually want to be in it since I'll need some reference pieces to go off anyway.
So here's my proposal, anyone that wants to be a part of this comment with the following:
- Pictures of your preferred board.
- Links to pictures of yourself (If you prefer to have an alternative persona/character take your place I'm more than happy to do that. I know some aren't keen on having their identity on the internet)
- Videos (if there are any) of you riding so I can try and capture your personality.
- Anything you'd like included (preferred outfit for example) that you feel represents you.
Added so far:
@Lia
@blkwalnutgrwr
@b0ardski
@HanahsDax
@stinkyface
@HorsePlay
@NotSureDepending on the quantity of submissions will determine the setting and overall theme of the artwork so I've not made any plans for that yet. All I know is I want it to be one big piece with us all in it :)
Deadline has been met.
If you still want in just comment, still time to add more while I work on how this'll look :)
I'll set a deadline of 24th (June) for entries so I can get to planning. If you miss the deadline but still want in comment anyway and I'll see if I can squeeze you in. It'll take a while for me to even get a rough sketch done depending on how many want in so adding a few more along the way shouldn't be too difficult.Edit : Finished it~

@Lia -- Love your artwork! I'd be honored to be included. Ah... but where to start? Funky boards with wooden fenders and external batteries. Lightweight old guy, in glasses with a Take-a-Look rearview mirror attached. Rides with hands in jacket pockets. Wears full gear including impressive leading shoulder/upper-arm armor, Fox long elbow pads, dirty-white Scabs kneepads, and black-and-white-striped 1Tri wrist guards. Scuffed, old, black skate helmet, often on over a jacket hood for warmth in cooler weather, mornings or evenings. Pigeon-toed riding stance -- leading foot perpendicular to the line of travel. Trailing foot as close to the tire-action as possible. Odd shoes, sometimes different for leading and trailing feet. Pants always tucked into (sometimes unmated) socks for bug avoidance. Rides mostly straight stock-upright, carving pavement trails through woods and farm fields through all kinds of weather. Rarely rides at night. Occasionally pushes the board's limits. Rides pushback a lot, accelerate and ease, again and again in subtle weight-shift dance steps. Smiles and waves a greeting in passing to any-and-everybody on the trail.
Probably more information than you want, but probably not what you need.
-
@Lia you have to do a caricature based on that description. Oversize head and cartoonie.
-
Hey @stinkyface, you need to get yourself in on this, too!
Healing up after your surprise fall, I trust? After your story I have been stopping more often to kick debris off the trail I ride.
-
should have got some video of me mowing yesterday but this'll give you the idea
-
@blkwalnutgrwr Quite the description but very thorough so I've got plenty to reference.Just in case I'll make sure to pass a rough draft by you first just in case I get anything wrong :)
@stinkyface Aha very tempting, let me know if you'd like to be in this. The more the merrier!
@b0ardski That's a great use for the board. Might have to try that next time my gran wants her grass cutting.
-
@b0ardski That's a great use for the board. Might have to try that next time my gran wants her grass cutting.
It's a bit tricky on my lumpy bumpy excuse for a lawn, even then I was stopping to laugh a lot in the spots I could navigate;-)

@Lia Oh you know you can count on me to join the party. It’s probably cuz I think most of the riders on here are real life heroes, especially yourself but when I visualize your idea this image pops in my head.
-
@HanahsDax The temptation to do something like that is pretty high up there.
-
-
HHanahsDax @NotSure 20 June 2021, 16:53 UTC
@NotSure Looks like a chill place to cruise. I like how you wave to everyone, a good way to represent the OW community.
-
@NotSure Great ride vid, song reminds me a little bit of the IT Crowd intro :)
Did you want to be in the art piece? If so do you have any pics of your ride and how you'd like to be drawn. I can go off a description or use a persona/character if you prefer.
-
@Lia I'm happy to be in the group art. I like the idea that, yourself included we don't know what we all look like. So drawing us is like painting blind.
Key features for me are:
- Commuter (not with a briefcase pls)
- Aussie (comfortable with however you interpret that)
- Bump on head from last stack
- My wheel is probably 1 of a handful that is polished and no longer black.
- Jacket, helmet and general kit is black, as is my board, except the shiny wheel.
-
@stinkyface Added to the list :)
-
@Lia,
I'm new the community (and to OW, in general) ... but would love to be included if you wish it.
I've set a few photos and videos into a public iCloud folder. Let me know when you've grabbed what you need and I'll take it back down.
Link: https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B0gGDdyTvGUUikJStyle Notes:
- Recreational (not commuter)
- California casual ... however you interpret that! :)
- My wheel is DIRTY as it is most often used around the horses and related chores. (I included a screen grab of "as new" from OW's Customizer tool.)
- Tall, “sporty” … hair pulled into pony tail with long, unruly bangs
- Usually seen wearing a straw hat and bandana; often in long shirt/blouse over tights.
- At home, I ride w/out safety gear except for leather gloves. Can be seen trotting the horses, carrying equipment (ladder, feed buckets, hay nets, ropes, pruning sheers …), or pulling the manure cart. Mostly hauling a large hay net over my shoulder!
- On the street, I ride with helmet, knee pads, wrist guards … and often ride in a timid stance (stiff, hands together almost “like a rabbit” according to my husband but, in my case, the two hands are facing one another as loosely held fists, touching at the mid-finger knuckles; thumb tips also touching; elbows kept close to my sides) <<— I don’t often ride streets and am easily intimated by traffic.
- Footwear? I started out riding in my western boots ... but now ride almost exclusively in slip-on Vans that match my board (similar shade of yellow).
Too much info, perhaps? ;-)
-
@HorsePlay New or old everyone here is welcome to be in it :)
Many thanks for all the reference material, will help me plenty when getting everyone down on the (digital) canvas.

Frankly, I dress like it's perpetually laundry day these days, Plaid pajamas and v-neck tees mostly. Hoodies when it's cold.
Yellow rails with dark blue fender with a black craftnride fender bag, a kush nug hi, and I added a ring of Alexa-compatible 3-pin LEDs to the undercarriage for illumination. Like Kit from Knightrider lol.
Considering how posh the area in that video appears, perhaps a homeless monopoly guy lol? I have a video of me in my mcfly hat, but i might have to downsample it. I'll post it here later if i do.

I know that feeling, thankfully my board is perpetually covered in dirt so at worst it matches the rest of me.
Will get to work on it soon, got a few idea's floating round my head on the scene.

re: above
What an incredibly beautiful face! His expression seems, to me, to radiate hope, warmth and kindness. Those eyes!!
-
@NotSure sure that could be me! He has a great smile.
-
-
@NotSure Oh I've seen those hats, looks even cooler than it does in the images I've seen!
Will for sure be putting that in :) -
So it begins~
Only the preview window, it doesn't look like much since the ref folder I made over the weekend is hidden ;)
While I'm here...@NotSure I noticed while going over one of the vids that it looks like you ride with the right foot on the front pad, is that correct? Just one of those little details I want to make sure I get right.
@stinkyface Do you happen to have a preferred set of clothing (certain shirts, jeans/shorts, etc) when riding, I wasn't able to piece much together when creating some reference material on past posts.
-
@Lia light blue jeans and a grey hoodie today. Backpack of stuff on board. Did I mention that I rode the 8km home in the rain one time with an umbrella ☔☔. Was slow and got a lot of laughs from all who saw.
-
@stinkyface Thanks :)
That must have been one interesting ride! -

Correct. I also play ukulele but i don't have any video of me playing on my onewheel... yet!

I now have a whole new image of a modern, strolling minstrel. Today’s version wears a colorful ball cap … and is a rolling minstrel! (I’ll be looking forward to your new video!)
-
Finally had some more time to continue drawing. Got the base sketch and positions done, now working on a final sketch layer to figure out how everything is going to look. Only got 2 and a half riders done on that so far, I'm not the fastest drawer out there but I'm happy with how it's coming :)
For anyone that wants to see how far along it's coming click the image below to take a cheeky peak at a partial screenshot.
-
@Lia, Yahoo! Looking so cool! :)
-
Sorry this is taking forever. Set myself some time at the end of each day to work on it so should speed things up :)
Everyone has now been sketched out and ready for final lineart, detailing, colouring and shading.
If you want to take a peak below is what you all look like so far (without the blurring in the preview of course). Feel free to gimme a poke if you'd like anything tweaking.

I sleep now, 1:30am lol

Lia rides on water!
(Wasn’t really sure how to phrase that. Akin to walking on water … but riding. To use OW verb ‘float’ just didn’t have any impact at all. Of course, we all float on water … naturally, w/out the OW.)
Love the progress! Super!
-
@HorsePlay Aha floating on the water would be cool. Onewheel fem-jesus lol.
Instead I'll just be in it, rail deep since it's something I tend to do when I find the right body of water. -
H
@Lia “X-Stream Lia” is one of my nicknames I have dubbed you.
-
Alright, got the flat colours down for everyone (except me, ignore me for now!)
Bare in mind I'll be shading these so they'll look like 200% better with actual shadows, highlights etc ;)Everyone happy with how they look so far? If I've missed or got something wrong I'll happily fix it.
This is probably the last update image before the final piece. Just wanted to share this one before I start laying down the final details to check I've not missed anything :)Leaving the environment to last, I find that therapeutic to do once the main focus is done.
-
H
@Lia Gonna have to say @blkwalnutgrwr’s board is spot on and @b0ardski looks rad AF. Thanks for putting this all together.
-
@HanahsDax Thanks :) Took a few retry's to get the look of it down. Making sure to add those little details where I can without upsetting the balance. More to add now with the basics down.
For b0ardski it only seemed right having him doing something gnarly having seen a few older posts of him skiing some pretty steep slopes. The foot holds on that board sold me on the idea ;) -
awsome Lia! you are great at capturing character, but the x-stream girl from planet Catwheel is still a ghost!
so glad you got the time "off" to do this.
ps the tiedye looks great -
First off... sorry this took so long :(
Long story short I've not been doing great so haven't been able to really get on with much. I have however been making sure I spent at least an hour every other day on this.
Anyway enough of that since it's hardly the time or place to discuss that. Here you all are :)
Click on the image to see the larger version that you can zoom in on (it's a big).
Hopefully I didn't forget anything >.>.
There is so much in this drawing I'd have to type an essay to go over everything.... so instead I'll let you all just zoom around and enjoy finding all the things I added in since there are numerous little nods, references and otherwise silly additions.
Where is this located? Not a clue, I just made it up with lots of reference material for whatever I wanted to add in. Decided to add 3 notable FM crew to the artwork too, namely Kyle, Jack and Ted. Apologies to everyone else from the team, the tree could only be so big as I realised quite quickly >.>
So there it is, I won't say anything more about it till you all get a good look for yourselves.
If you spot anything you like, recognise or otherwise want to know more about a bit share a snippet of it as a reply, I'd love to talk about it :)If you would like something added feel free to give me a poke, I'd be happy to make additional tweaks c:
.
If you'd like it printed I can pop it on my redbuddle account and do a test print first to make sure all the colours come out okay since things look wildly different on print, especially dark areas which usually all just blend.
Otherwise if you'd like to do it yourself feel free to download the full image off the google photos page. It should come out as a 7021x4967 pixel 20MB PNG, any smaller and you've got a low res version. -

H
@Lia Great addition throwing some of the FM crew in there. Is the paraglider the guy trying to land on a Onewheel? Is that the Captain himself showing how it’s done? Incredible work!
-
@HanahsDax Thanks :)
Only felt right to add them, was a hard choice on which to go with.Got it in one, fun little nod to the guy trying to mount their board from several thousand feet in the sky (ref).
The captain was a must especially to help break up the pond. -
@Lia, that is soooo fantastic! I love the new additions and references! I was already scrolling/zooming all over before reading your comments. I laughed out loud seeing the OW Yeti! Who are the woodland critters at the treeline? One resembles your avatar, sorta?
So sorry to hear you are pressing through a difficult time. Anything I can offer to help? (Do you need a prayer partner across the miles?)
-
"Stoke Hazard" on the police tape. LOL!
Oh, the poor board that suffered that moment. -
@HorsePlay Thankies :) Glad you're enjoying looking around the drawing.
The yeti is such a silly creation, I love it. Very practical although I don't envy whoever pulled it up the tree.
Those creatures over in the wooded area are some pony's that me and GF created a while back. Figured it would be cute to include them for funsies~
Glad you spotted the stoke hazard, it was inspired by a recent puncture I had which plagued my rides for a few weeks.
Many thanks for the offer, I'm slowly getting though stuff bit by bit :)
-
this is wonderful. i would've joined in, but i don't have any pix of me on my Pint, and i didn't want to hold up anything while i got one i liked. you are so talented!
-
@Franko Thanks :)
If you want I can still add you, will just have to find a way to squeeze you in ;)
I don't necessarily need a pic if that's an issue, a decent enough description should be enough. Managed to draw @stinkyface with a description, a few pics of their board and their thumb in one of the shots ;) -
Nicely done Lia!

Had to give some of the 3rd party's a shout too since without them a lot of the boards in the piece would look very similar.at 1st I thought Kyle was was throwing eggs at us!
XD that would have been a fun idea. I'm not too sure how Kyle would be since I've only ever seen him in the ad's and handful of interviews. I'd like to imagine he's a cool dude nonetheless like the rest of the guys and gals over at FM.
So many little things, wanted to add more but at a certain point it'll get too busy, that being said if Franko decides to join in I might poke a few more things on there while I'm at it ;)
we need 6foot5guy on his pint at the water front
Not a bad idea, @SixFootFiveGuy would you like in on this too?

@Lia said in Art piece for the forum members:
have you tried putting some slime in the tyre to help patch the leak?
It was there before the cactus barb ... and I'm sure is working hard against the little invader. The leak is, after all, very slow at this point. (I lost 3lbs of pressure this week.)
Funny thing: As you spotted the glass on the road ... I could smell the barb. We had just run a flat harrow over the front yard ... and I suspect we nicked a cactus in the process and pulled the random barb into the places where I ride. I recall catching a whiff and immediately thinking, "Uh-oh ...."
'Slushy' for the 7/11 drink colors -- how fitting! :)
@blkwalnutgrwr said in Art piece for the forum members:
@Lia and @HorsePlay -- Adding Armor-Dilloz Red sealant is like getting a new tire within a tire. Somewhere there's a video of Cory Boehne purposely puncturing and slashing a Vega and he cannot get it to leak air. Expensive, but it solves the problem -- without changing the tire.
Oh, ah! Thank you! I will look for it. I bet it would also be a great help to our riding mower tires which suffer badly in our yard. (Rough terrain, rough land.)
-
@HorsePlay said in Art piece for the forum members:
I think it tasted a cactus barb.
Put some dilloz in it. Add more barbs!
-
Goodness. The Armor-Dilloz home page has an image that plays on the OneWheel profile. That armadillo looks like ... something familiar ... right?
EDITED TO ADD: Nevermind. Now I see it ... yes, the product is specifically designed for the OneWheel. I should have read the text before acting from my surprise!!
-
@HorsePlay -- Seeing familiar Onewheel things through your fresh eyes is fun and enjoyable.

I don't necessarily need a pic if that's an issue, a decent enough description should be enough. Managed to draw @stinkyface with a description, a few pics of their board and their thumb in one of the shots ;)well, i admit i'm tempted -- but this week is jam packed for me, and i'm leaving Thursday for a few days (camping trip, but i'm bringing the Pint just in case!). so it wouldn't be until next week at the earliest. maybe i could get a photo during the trip!
Anyone else here have a sage colored Pint? am i the only one? i know there are other OW riders in my town, but i don't personally know any. i have run across people and talked to them, exchanged info, but then we've never seen each other again or ridden anywhere. most people i see on them in town are on XRs or Pluses. I need to find my local Pint Peeps!
-
@Franko Hope you enjoy :)
Don't worry about the wait, it took me nearly a month between the "finished" piece and the prior update ;)
-
@Lia haha, good point. i will try to ignore that fact so it doesn't feed my procrastination, lol
-
Hey @Lia, love the art. Reminds me of some old cartoon books I read as a kid, with so many hidden stories!
-
Finally got it print ready with some minor edits so the colours popped and darker parts were actually visible.
Click on the image to see the larger version that you can zoom in on (it's a big).
Got the large poster version and mounted to 2x A1 sheets of foamboard to make a rigid A0 posterboard :)
Hard to take pics of it since the glossy finish meant my flash kept reflecting back into my phone cam. Managed this angle though~
If anyone wants one I put it up on Redbubble in a few of the product types they have to offer :)
Edit
:O
-
@Lia I dunno. Tepid pitch... Here lemme try:
Well? Cough it up cheapskates! Tell us about all the other art pieces you've all been featured in lately, hmm? My guess is the answer is a big fat NONE.
Here is your chance to commemorate yourself with a heart-felt, one-of-a-kind holiday keepsake. Order today! Supplies are limited.
Whatcha think?
-
@NotSure Aha I wish I had the self confidence to say anything close to that lol.
Never did commissions because I don't know what I'd charge people >.>I should probably clarify just in case, I'm not expecting anyone to buy one so don't feel pressured ^-^ I just put it there because I can at least vouch for the quality if anyone does actually want a physical version.
If you'd rather DIY it the full image is available in my prior reply :)

Oh, cool ... I'd never thought of anything like that. I like the laptop sleeve ... but am just about to retire my MacBook Pro 15". I wonder if the newer 16" would fit in the same sleeve? Hmm...
In other ponderings, I love scarves and see that Redbubble offers them. Is it possible/difficult/any-extra-cost-or-effort-or-grief-to-you to offer the print on a scarf?
Thanks!
-
@HorsePlay said in Art piece for the forum members:

they look good flapping in the wind too.
-
@HorsePlay That's a good question, I assume RB will add sleeves for the bigger models soon since they appear to be on top of these things :)
Will look into modifying it to fit the scarf, it's a square so will need to fill some space above and below so it'll fit ;)

My scarf arrived Wed evening ... but I didn't know it until Thursday morning until I saw the email alert from Redbubble. :)
Facing 30mph winds, I rode the OW down to the mailbox and retrieved the package. I wore the scarf, paired with a horsey-themed vest, for Thanksgiving dinner to show off "my favorite things" (horses and OW). Everyone thought the scarf was "too cool!!" Great comments all around the table.
The winds leading into Thursday morning killed had one of my horse shelters ... tearing off the side panel enclosures. By the time we came home from Thanksgiving dinner, our power had been shut off (fire safety, a California-thing, I think) and we've been w/out for almost 24 hours. Always something, huh!?!
-
@horseplay Happy to hear it arrived and was well received :)
Sorry to hear about the horse shelter and power outage, hope the horses are safe and it's an easy fix.
